COUNCIL ON AGING MEETING
DUNE 20, 1996
GOVERNMENT CENTER
CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at
9:10 a.m. by Chairman, Myrtle Munns .
ROLL CALL: Members present were Larry
Weisenburger, Herb Giese, Lee Kellaher, Andy Germain,
Myrtle Munns, Roberta Moe, Phil Hammer, John
Mortensen, Ethel Peterson, and Mary Lou Smith.
Delores Loock was excused. Also present were Cindy
Icard, Sandy Gehrmann, Jonna Fedie, Barb Blaisdell,
Carol Gorke, Jean VandeBerg, Lorraine Jacobs, Janice
Thompson, Donna Zacharias, Sharon Smith, and Joanne
Matysik.
ADOPTION OF AGENDA: A motion was made by
Herb Giese and seconded by John Mortensen to adopt the
agenda; motion carried.
DATE OF NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be
July 18, 1996.
ACTION ON PREVIOUS MINUTES: A motion was
made by Lee Kellaher and seconded by Mary Lou Smith
to accept May minutes as printed; motion carried.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
Fundraisers: Cleared $140.00 on Human -I -Tees
(T-Shirt) sale. The cookbooks will be on sale at the
County Fair. A "Photo Magic System 2" camera to make
buttons was purchased. A motion was made by Larry
Weisenburger and seconded by Andy Germain to approve
the camera be used at the Wisconsin Coalition of Aging
Groups Convention and that the Operations Committee
develop policies to rent out equipment. Rulers to be
given out at the County Fair for Department on Aging
outreach were distributed..
NEW BUSINESS:
Appointment of Nominating Committee: Chairman,
Myrtle Munns appointed Mary Lou Smith and Lee
Kellaher to the Nominating Committee.
Wisconsin Long Term Care and Disability Profiles:
Handouts were distributed and discussed regarding
Wisconsins standing on Long Term Care and information
from Coping with Disability: Wisconsin's Frail Elderly
Living at Home.
Sharon Smith - Faith In Action: A presentation on the
Faith In Action program was given by Sharon Smith.
Ten churches are currently participating in the program.
Staff Reports:
A news article was read and distributed called "Treatment
of elders sets stage for our treatment later".
"What Makes the Aging Network Unique?", "What is a
Board", and the "1996 Allocations of Western Wisconsin"
were distributed.
Residents of Maple Manor in New Richmond donated to
DayAway.
On September 7th, a day trip has been scheduled to go to
the McKnight Theater to see the I Love a Piano The
Music of Irving Berlin. The cost is $26.00 and includes
the bus and show.
The Senior Citizen Day at W.I.T.C. was a success.
The Volunteer Transportation Program, regarding drivers
and funding, was discussed. A revised letter to
participants was distributed with these possible changes in
policy: "Up to 20 trips per year will be authorized based
on availability of drivers and funds. Individuals with
greater long term, long distance needs will be linked with
Faith In Action. " This new policy was developed due to
lack of drivers and funding. A motion was made by Herb
Giese and seconded by Larry Weisenburger to adopt the
new policy; motion carried.
The Spring Card Tournament had 161 participating.
WWAAA Report: Joanne Matysik was appointed to the
Western Wisconsin Area Agency on Aging Advisory
Board. At the last meeting a nutritionist did a
presentation on liquid supplement products and stated the
importance of nutrition sites for older people. Donna
McDowell discussed what was happening at the State
level with Aging Programs. This is not the time to
reorganize at the local level. State reorganization should
be running smoothly first.
SITEXENTER REPORTS:
DEER PARK: Participants will be attending the Card
Invitational at the Hudson Senior Center. The Center
Board will subsidize Foot Care for regular participants
only. Blood pressure and tetanus shots were given.
Participants will be going to Eau Claire. Gifts were given
for Fathers Day. Deer Park Senior Center will host
another card invitational in August.
GLENWOOD CITY: 80 Strings Around the World was
presented on June 13th. The Center had a Fathers Day
Party. Many are playing Bingo. On June 28th,
participants will be going to the strawberry patch in
Menomonie.
BALDWIN: Martha Mabis from U.W. Extension will do
a presentation on summer salads and safe handling of
food. 12 people went to the Hudson Card Invitational.
A motion was made by Larry Weisenburger and seconded
by Andy Germain to approve the sale of Baldwin Senior
Center cards at the County Fair; motion carried. There
are new people on the Baldwin Senior Center Board.
HUDSON: Videos are shown every Monday. Pepper
Fest Booth is being planned. A new member is being
sought for the Senior Center Board. The Center will
purchase a flag. On August 1st, there will be a day trip
to Osceola. The first Card Invitational Tournament was
enjoyed by all that attended.
NEW RICHMOND: On June 14 and 15th, the Center
sold brats and hot dogs at More 4 and cleared $500.00.
Martha Mabis will do a presentation on salads next
Thursday. Blood Pressures will be taken next Tuesday.
SOMERSET: Elected a King and Queen for Pea Soup
Days. A magic show is being planned. Air Conditioning
is being put in the Senior Center today. The Center has
to raise funds to pay for it.
WOODVILLE: Plans on going to Hudson's next card
Invitational. Martha Mabis did a presentation on salads.
People enjoy playing Bingo.
A motion was made by Larry Weisenburger and seconded
by Andy Germain to approve all Senior Center trips out
of County; motion carried.
The Trip Committee will meet June 21 at 2:00 p.m.
A motion was made by Herb Giese and seconded by
Andy Germain to adj ourn meeting at 11: 40 a. m. ; motion
carried.
