COUNCIL ON AGING MEETING
AUGUST 15, 1996
GOVERNMENT CENTER
CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at
9:05 a.m. by Chairman, Herb Giese.
ROLL CALL: Members present were Larry
Weisenburger, Herb Giese, Lee Kellaher, Andy Germain,
John Mortensen, Phil Hammer, Ethel Peterson, and
Delores Loock. Mary Lou Smith and Roberta Moe were
excused. Also present were Cindy Icard, Sandy
Gehrmann, Jonna Fedie, Barb Blaisdell, Carol Gorke,
Lorraine Jacobs, Donna Zacharias, Peggy Patterson, Elma
Liberty, Virginia Peterson, Janice Thompson, and Sherry
Crosby.
ADOPTION OF AGENDA: A motion was made by
Larry Weisenburger and seconded by Lee Kellaher to
adopt the agenda; motion carried.
DATE OF NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be
Wednesday, September 18, 1996 (note date change) at
9:00 a.m.
ACTION ON PREVIOUS MINUTES: A motion was
made by John Mortensen and seconded by Lee Kellaher
to accept July minutes as printed with correction of
previous minutes being June, not May, and that the
Leadership Training on September llth will be in the
Community Room of the Government Center; motion
carried.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
Special Events Reports: The County Fair was July 25th
through July 28th. We received $43.00 from the County
Fair Board for popcorn for Senior Citizens Day. With all
sales at the Fair the Department on Aging Programs took
in $1,067.62. Sandy Gehrmann and Barb Blaisdell went
to the Coalition of WI Aging Groups Conference in
Stevens Point on July 31st. They sold cookbooks and
buttons and took in $500.00 for programs. Last Saturday
Sandy and Barb went to Farm City Days and sold buttons
and took in $90.00.
NEW BUSINESS:
Committee Appointments: Chairman Giese appointed
the following sub -committees: Operations: Delores
Loock, Andy Germain, Herb Giese, and Ethel Peterson;
Personnel: Roberta Moe, Larry Weisenburger, and Mary
Lou Smith; Transportation: Lee Kellaher, Phil Hammer,
and John Mortensen. The sub -committees will meet
occasionally at 8:30 a.m. before Council on Aging
meetings.
1997 Budget: The Budget Summary sheets for 1996 and
1997 were distributed and discussed. The entire
Department on Aging '97 budget is $484,734. The
Council went through the Aging Mission. The 1997
Vehicle Transportation Contracts were discussed. Aging
and Handicapped Transportation, Inc. contract is $1,500
and Shared Ride Taxi is $2,100. A motion was made by
Lee Kellaher and Larry Weisenburger to approve the
1997 Budget as presented; motion carried.
AARP meetings are held at the New Richmond Senior
Center the 3rd Tuesdays of each month at 1:00. The
Coalition of WI Aging Groups will meet on September
9th at the Menomonie Senior Center.
Staff Reports
"Nutrition Programs Have Succeeded In Their Mission"
handout was distributed.
There will be a 7% cut in USDA in '97. May need to
close the Nutrition Sites sometime in December to make
up for cut.
A motion was made by Larry Weisenburger and seconded
by Phil Hammer to allow the Disability Coalition use the
New Richmond van August 23rd through August 25th to
go to Grantsberg. The Coalition will pay 50( per mile;
motion carried.
There will be a Candidate Forum on September 7th at the
Lakefront park in Hudson and on October 26th in Roberts
(location not yet determined). A motion was made by
Delores Loock and seconded by Ethel Peterson to allow
the Department on Aging vans to transport 60+
participants to the forums; motion carried.
SITE/CENTER REPORTS:
DEER PARK: Had monthly evening meal and played
cards. Participants went to Eau Claire and would like to
go to the MN State Fair. Next week a picnic in the park
is scheduled. Discussed van repairs. The cook will be
done the end of December.
GLENWOOD CITY: Bingo is going well. The Center
will have the 2nd Annual Salad Luncheon tomorrow from
11:00-2:00. Participants would like to schedule a trip to
Red Wing.
BALDWIN: Thrift Sale was August 1st and went well.
Participants would like to go to Menomonie. Participants
went to the Woodville Center Salad Luncheon and plan to
go the Glenwood City Center Luncheon tomorrow. A
Retired Teacher Party recognition and a Masquerade
Dance are being scheduled.
HUDSON: Videos are shown every Tuesday and
Thursday. Pepper Fest activities are being planned. An
October picnic is being planned at Willow River State
Park.
NEW RICHMOND: Participants went to Augusta last
week. On September 20th they will go on the Andiamo.
Card party is scheduled for August 27th.
SOMERSET: Pan Handlers performed last week. A
picnic is scheduled for September 6th.
WOODVILLE: The Site Supervisor, Virginia Peterson
started two weeks ago. The Salad Luncheon was a
success. Diners are playing cards and Bingo.
Participants would like to schedule a van trip in
September.
A motion was made by Delores Loock and seconded by
John Mortensen to approve all van trips; motion carried.
A motion was made by Phil Hammer and seconded by
John Mortensen to adjourn meeting at 12:18 p.m.; motion
carried.
