Next Meeting: Wed. February 28, 1996
Security:
Bruce introduced Annette Massie to the committee. Annette
discussed the situation of her purse being stolen in December. She
feels that her purse was taken out of her desk drawer in her office
while she was gone. Bruce expressed his concern about the general
public having access to there area. Ron and Lu Verne were taken on
a tour of the Computer Services suite.
Bruce presented a plan developed by staff to improve security in
the Computer Services Suite. This would involve keeping the main
door locked at all times using a cipher lock and creating a
security entry point at the back hall way adjoining the Department
on Aging. Near this security entry point would be a pass through
for printouts. Bruce said that preliminary costs for this were
estimated to'be between $600 and $1000. Bruce was instructed to
get firm figures and take it to Finance.
Policy Regardincr Software Acquisition:
Bruce passed around draft for hardware and software acquisition
policy he developed using flow chart discussed at last meeting.
Discussion on statements "It is the responsibility of Computer
Services to specify and acquire all County owned computer equipment
and hardware. Departments are not allowed to directly purchase
computer hardware, software, or computer services."
Members felt this was too restrictive and discouraged department
initiative. Bruce was concerned that it would create real problems
if every department were allowed to purchase their own computers.
He felt that low cost should not be the determining factor if a
department was to choose to buy a non standard brand. Dan said
that if a department chose to buy a cheap computer, that Computer
Services would not support it. Bruce said that he felt that a such
a policy would not work as eventually he'd be required to support
it anyway. Ellen said that this wording was similar to policy
approved years ago.
Ron felt there should be some preferred standards. Lu Verne felt
that the wording could be revised so that it wasn't quite as harsh.
Dan and Bruce were directed to work on some wording of this policy
and bring it to the next meeting. Members were encouraged to look
the handouts over and make suggestions to Bruce prior to the next
meeting.
Voice Recognition:
Tom Belongia at the Sheriff's office has been researching computer
voice recognition and scheduled a demonstration. Bruce felt that
demonstration should be coordinated through his office. Members
felt this was an oversight on the part of the Sheriff's office and
was not meant to circumvent the system. This also relates to
Software and Hardware Acquisition policy.
WAN:
Bruce stated that he just found out that Ameritech and Frontier
were having difficulty in coming to an agreement so that the ISDN
line would be installed. Dan stated that Ameritech, by reputation,
is sometimes quite difficult to deal with.
