PUBLIC PROTECTION COMMITTEE MEETING
July 12, 1996
MEMBERS PRESENT: Bill Krueger, Herb Giese, Chuck Mehls, Jack Dowd
and Bob Gunderson.
STAFF PRESENT: Sheriff Paul Burch, Chief Deputy Max Ihrke and
Patrol Captain Roland Thompson.
Meeting called to order by Chairman Krueger at 9:04 a.m. Motion to
approve the agenda as published by Giese/Mehls. Carried, as the
only item of business concerned the proposal for hiring three
patrol officers and was carried over from the July 8th meeting.
Date of the next meeting is August 7 at 1:00 p.m.
Burch, Ihrke and Thompson presented revised figures for the hiring
of three new patrol officers based upon federal funds now available
for a second round of hiring of partially reimbursed -officers.
Ihrke and Burch had been in contact with Madison since the July 8th
meeting and had clarified the questions asked of them by the
committee and reaffirmed that funds were available through the
State to the County for officer positions.
Discussion took place as to whether or not a request for three
officers would be difficult to justify during a single hiring.
Krueger suggested the possibility of hiring two or perhaps one with
the remaining number at a later date.
Following a lengthy discussion concerning off -set hiring times,
possible loss of funding if a commitment were not made now,
diluting a patrol shift and the fact that no new officers had been
hired for the past six years, the committee members were adamant
that we should hire a total of three during the same hiring
procedure.
Motion by Giese/Mehls to go to the Personnel Committee meeting on
July 16th to recommend the hiring of three patrol officers based
upon and utilizing the Federal reimbursement guidelines. Roll call
vote: Dowd -yes, Gunderson -yes, Mehls-yes, Giese -yes, Krueger -no.
Motion carried.
Motion by Dowd/Gunderson to adjourn at 11:10 a.m. Carried.
Chuck Mehls, Secretary
