PUBLIC PROTECTION COMMITTEE MEETING
September 11, 1997
SPECIAL MEETING
MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairman Bill Krueger, Herb Giese, Chuck Mehls
and Bob Gunderson. Jack Dowd was excused.
STAFF PRESENT: Sheriff Paul Burch and Renee Carufel.
Meeting called to order at the Baldwin Police Station at 1:00 p.m.
by Chairman Krueger. Motion to approve the agenda by Geise/Mehls.
Carried.
Discussion of the repair of the Jail panel boards financing was
held. It was noted that $23,000 from Jail assessment fund was
allocated to pay for the engineering of this project at a previous
meeting. Sheriff Burch also reported that there is only about
$7,000 in the Jail Assessment fund at this time. No decision was
made at this time for the funding of the balance of this project.
Move to adjourn by Giese at 1:30 p.m.
The Committee moved into Counsel Chambers for the State Mobile Data
Computing Demonstration. The meeting began at 1:45 p.m.
The three State representatives were Robert DeArmond from ElectoCom
Communication Systems from Littleton, Colorado; Nick Bierman from
General Communications of Madison, Wisconsin and James Tollaksen,
Account Manager from GTE Telephone Operations of Sun Prairie,
Wisconsin.
Each gentleman explained a different phase of setting up laptops in
patrol cars. They displayed the equipment that would be needed
such as a laptop, modem, radio and antenna.
They explained that we are fortunate in this area because we have
several towers they could use to access communication to federal
and state data bases. The State will create the back -bone of this
system and each municipality will have to purchase the portable
units. The State would insist that the portable computers be
installed by their agency or a certified General Communications
dealer. The State will also program each unit and gives it an ID
number. There will be no charge to use the system. Patrol officers
can call the State and receive a complete log of transactions
every month. The cost would be around $4705 per unit.
The meeting adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
Chuck Mehls, Secretary
Renee Carufel, Recording Secretary
