' iE a , unMOw Historical Geomomholo¢v: This areaof ST Croix County was formed by ground moraine depouis during the last Wisconsin Glacial Episode occurring 12,000 to 15,000 years ago Glaciation resulted in erosion, deposition, stream erosion, and other processes that influenced the type, quam ry, and quality of the subsurface sod' parent materials" Wisconsin Is divided into 5 primary sod regions based on geographic location, broad vegmtion type (forest is prairie] and tenure of parent materials These 5 primary regions are further broken dawn into 11 suit -groups based on cover types of tenure classes The soils of this area of St Croix County belong to Soil Regions F which is characterized by Gloom alfs on forested silty upland and plains (Bockherm, l G, & Hartemrnk, A E (2012) The Sods of Wisconsin Springer Publishing) The parent material of the tested area consists of windblown loess and sdry lacu4rme deposits laid over a dense sandy loam till (see attachment 2) Though the topsoils in the area express good soil structure, the underlying glacial till subsoils are dense and very firm as a result of the previous glacial activity l oil Margin: USDA Web Soil Survey data classify the soils in the tested area as a Skyberg Silt foam The Skyberg series consists of very deep, poorly drained sons that formed in 25 to 25 centimeters of silty sine loamy sediments and the underlying glacial On These soils are on linear and concave slopes on dissected till plans Tha Solberg series a Mille Epraqualf subgroup of the All sod order Emaqur[oils are characterized by wet conditions("ai I which are generally saturated from above ("epf)(fee attachment 3) These sods can often be hydnc and found in or around wetlands The slopes in the observed area have likely aided drainage adequately to prevent wetland or hydnc sod conditions from fwmrng here Supply are dense in the till below, but maintain weak struRwe and are generally not ,massive Soll Conalitions and Surface Water Flow. Surface and subsurface drainage from the site Flows primarily south towards the 194 corridor as indicated on the topographic maps Overall, the sad evaluation results revealed a relatively consistent topsoil and subsoil regime throughout the test area Topsoil (A-Honzonl depth ranged from 0I inches and was medium to dark brown (10YR 3/3, 10YR 3/2) Topsoil tenure was mainly spit loam with strong to moderate granular structure A few faint 2 5YR 4/6redonmorphic features were observed in the brown top I at Borings l and 3 The sods in horizon 2 for each of these brings bordered on being a 10yR 4/3 subsoil but were ultimately determined to be a ICYR 3/3 topsoil color and not a subsoil given their lack of a distinction from the top soil above The visible presence of Redoxrmorph¢ features in the darker top soils at a depth of 2 inches indicates that where sons are saturated for long periods time, Redoxrmorph¢ features will be visible even in the darker brown top sons The lack of visible Repho morpbrc features in any of the top soils horizons above T riches indicates these soils are not likely saturated for a long enough period of time for the features to develop firs indicates that there would be at least 6 7 inches of in -situ soil available to accommodate a properly designed POWTS Subsoils (B-Hanzon) were primarily light brown, to light reddish brown clay loam and sandy clay Iwms With moderate to weak structure Sad structure deteriorated quickly as depth Increased with most test pits having massive silty to sandy clay loam soils underlying the slit oam Redozimorphlc features were present throughout the subsoil horizons Redoxlmorphlc features began as few, fine, M1mq and became many to common large and distinct or prominent as depth increased "is Indicates that "perchlni does take place, but likely for a shorter period of time It also Indicates that It is winter longer at greater depths and probably not as wet and for shorter durations nearer W the surface No fill soils were encountered Itdoes not appear that a budding has ever been present in the tested area It should be rote! Nat western central Wisconsin has had a very wet spring including a V rain event and "inland hurnune" all day -soaking 2-3 rain event whin the two weeks leading up to the soil observations Ihave conducted numerous soil test within close proximity to this area within that time frame and I would note that when I have encountered poorly draining soil conditions as of recent, the pits have begun to immediately fill with water clue to the saturated ground conditions Iwassurprised that none of the 4 pits I observed at this property showed any signs of water infiltration after being left open for z hours and the only were moist towetbut not completely saturated coo appears to indicate soil saturation conditions are likely due to a tension saturation or a "perched" seasonal water table condition which is likely most prominent in the early spring and not permanently saturated soil conditions and also indicates that site slope and the strong sail structures are adequate to encourage water movement dmvnslope and away from the test site A review of previous soil tests conducted in the vicinity indicates similar mil consumes to those observed a roll Interpretive cetermmatmn report of completed by eoMried Environmental in 20M based on art Wegerees zWz con test report in the northeast tamer of property found similar'Nio" mil conditions and treatment challenges The sons in Bonng4 (in the are, of the loR completed in 2004) were not significantly different or better for treatment than Borings 1-3 which were lower In elevation The soils in Boring 4 (in hie area of the previous mil test) were not significantly different or better for treatment than Borings 1-3 which were lower in elevation The findings, conclusions, and recommendations of that report are included here for reference and were considered by myself in preparation of this report(see attachment4) It should be noted that given the contour length required to achieve a low linear loading rate for the system recommended in the initial IDR and the location of the borings In retained to the R-O-W easement and the east property line it would be difficult to site a 3 or bedroom mound system In this location today without using additional technology W reduce the mounds necessary footprint Conclusions/Recommendations: The site appears to be impacted by a "perched" seasonal water table that is likely caused by the densic sandy loam and sandy clay loam sods in the underlying [ill. Though Redmimorphic features are observed throughout the subsoil, they were more prominent at greater depths Indicating the upper horizons are notwetasaften and fora shorterperiod of time Nowhere on the site was there a clear 4-mch horizon below the topsoil and therefore the site is all "Ali" No Redoximorphic features were observed in the q l l ft Y 1 .I Attachment 1: Wetlands/Drainage 5'0o 75DO9 9028 w+v[ivvue.m [.n+r .sayr r [mom .r+. swww cmvma 007 0 1503 ., ATTACHMENT SJI Mn C(,k C ,nry Mb , M E B E E E Es,A E EAuAE SaB E SaC2 E sr tS.n0lpw+m 'nvt9 m am m g m m em mA d mm XN,W,NNRO,m,,, VbE 5oY 5urvry blb1030 W Witl CagrEe SL Suq Vq 1 dJ ATTACHMENT Map Unit Legend •owaa .wena a e.Man nmoz tummy loam 12 b 20 percent IS 10% 'II Named &A,10 am1o2 _ 101I _-- Ie0%. o...M, F.5 FI1.w Am WI 2b6 pnml 122 94% WoM Moo Allow am loam, 0 ba 60 4TA "Iam 4opn SaB fien0epo e111loam 2 10 6 4561 65 Se C2 U1619111111m 61o12 06 52j _ want ato 9P .5moomg HIP D4R percam: Not NB —VIMI oat 206 06 50% tAC2 PeI WI tomatoYl11wm 6m12 parr..tm a. armed MAN, Am AM a lnYrui 12Pa 100I cmoleMeWa.I.lo waealvyxso2*Msu sle.ea PINNI 211LFLDO S«ULHV HVFULSWLHG 6i %e'MULHV (VWDEOLVKHG 6HULHV SHY -)& '0$ 7 1 6.<%(5' 6(51(6 ]KH 6N\EHUJ VHULHV FRQVLVWV RI YHU\ GHHS SRRUO\ GUDL ORDP\ VHGLPHOWV DOG WKH XQGHUO\LQJ JODFLDO WLOO 71 SODLOV 6ORSH UDOJHV IURP WR SHUFHOW OHDQ DQOXD SUHFLSLWDWLRO LV DERXW -- PLOOLPHWHUV 7$,2120,& &/$604OH ORDP\ PL[HG VXSHUDFWLYH PHVLF ORO 7<3,&$/ 3I'21, 6N\EHUJ VLOW ORDP RQ D OLQHDU VORSH RI DERXW PHWHUV DERYH VHD OHYHO &RORUV DUH IRU PR $S WR FHOWLPHWHUV"EODFN <5 VLOW ORDP JUD' VOLJKWO\DFLG`DEUXSW VPRRWK ERXQGDU\ WR FHOW ( WR - FHQWLPHWHUV' GDUN JUD\LVK EURZO <5 VL, VWUXFWXUH° IULDEOH` PRGHUDWHO\DFLG'JUDGXDO ZDY\E %WJ ' WR' FHQWLPHWHUV GDUN JUD\LVK EURZO "< VXEDQJXODU EORFN\ VWUXFWXUH' IULDEOH' FRPPRQ GLVWL, SHGV' IHZ ILOH GLVWLQFW EURZO <5 PDVVHV RI LURO WR FHQWLPHWHUV WKLFN %WJ WR " FHQWLPHWHUV° GDUN JUD\LVK EURZO SDUWLOJ WR VWURQJ PHGLXP DOG FRDUVH DOJXODU EORFN` FOD\ ILOPV AD IDFHV RI SHGV' PDQ\ WKLQ JUD\ <5 - VDC PHGLXP GLVWLQFW OLJKW ROLYH EURZQ <- PDVVHV Al VWUROJO\DFLG'JUDGXDO ZDY\ERXQGDU\ %WJ - WR " FHQWLPHWHUV GDUN JUD\LVK EURZO - SDUWLOJ WR VWURQJ PHGLXP DOG FRDUVH DQJXODU EORFN` ILOPV RQ IDFHV RI SHGV" PDO\ WKLO JUD\ <5 - VDQG DO \HOORZLVK EURZO <5- PDVVHV RI LURO DFFXPXODWLRO JUDGXDO ZDY\ ERXQGDU\ &RPELOHG WKLFNQHVV RI WKH % %&J - WR " FHQWLPHWHUV' GDUN JUD\LVK EURZO '< ZHDN PHGLXP DQJXODU EORFN\` ILUP' PDQ\ FRDUVH SURPLQ DFFXPXODWLRO' DERXW SHUFHOW URFN UDWRIQ"VV41QMHl %& " WR ' FHQWLPHWHUV \HOORZLVK EURZO <5 " O SULVPDWLF VWUXFWXUH GLVVHFWHG E\IHZ REOLTXH IUDFW FDUERODWH WKUHDGV° PDO\ ILOH GLVWLQFW \HOORZLVK EU URFN IUDJPHOWV° VOLJKWO\ HIIHUYHVFHOW' PRGHUDWHO\ D ]<3( /2&$7,21, ODMRU /DOG SHVRXUFH $UHD 0/5$ LOQDKWWL )UHHERUO &RXQW\ OLQQHVRWO VXEVHW`DERXW PLOHV OR HWWSV, FDVRLOUHVRXUFH ODZU XFGDYLV HGX VGH'VHULHV VNEHUJ 6MULHV GLSWLRO a%(5-SHULHV IHHW ZHVW RI WKH QRUWKHDVW FRUGHU RI VHFWLRO 7 GHJUHHV PLOXWHV' 'VHFRQGV 1 DOG ORQJ$' GHJUHH\ 5$1'( .1 &+$5$&7(5,67,66 'HSWK WR JODFLDO WLOO WR `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ratty rr Buaaar Grern 4m9 N.
