January 24, 2008
Members Present: Esther Wentz, Tom Caflisch, Denise Gunderson, Steve Kirt, Ed
Thurman, Doug Briggs, Jeri Rockhill, Ann Davey, Sheriff Hillstead, Amber Perry, Eric
Johnson, Tom Hennes, and Joan Sprain
Guest: Greg Glass
Chair Esther Wentz called the meeting to order.
Tom Caflisch moved that the minutes from the last meeting be approved. Eric Johnson
seconded it. Motion carried.
Motion passed to approve the January agenda.
NEXT MEETING: Thursday, February 28 at 3:00 PM Room 1281— Government
Center
March meeting will be Thursday, March 27 th at 3:00 PM Room 1281 — Government
Center
OLD AND NEW BUSINESS
1. Name Change
The name of the committee was discussed and the decision was to rename the Meth
Advisory Committee to the St. Croix Co. Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Advisory
Committee.
2. Goals and Strategies:
The goal of the committee work is to reduce underage drinking by middle school age
teens.
Ann Davey brought up the issue of expulsion policies of county school districts and the
concern that students were left alone. A great deal of discussion followed with a
conclusion to look at alternatives like the Youth Service Bureau YCAP model which
provides an opportunity for students to continue learning after being expelled. An
exploratory sub - committee was created: Denise Gunderson, Doug Briggs, Jeri Rockhill
and Joan Sprain
3. Reports:
Butterfly House: Three people have been referred to Butterfly House by Hazelden. Two
others have graduated. There is now on -site counseling. Denise handed out their new
pamphlet.
Rescue Mission: Tom Hennes is looking at a physical location in downtown Hudson.
Caring About Kids Conference: Joan Sprain reported that UWEX and St. Croix Co.
Home and Community Education will be sponsoring a conference April 12 for parents,
caregivers and community members that will include a session on what parents can do
about underage drinking.
4. Other items
Dennis Hillstead reminded us not to forget about meth education. It will be placed on the
agenda for discussion at our next meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:30.
