HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolutions 2006 (19) RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE WISCONSIN TAXPAYER PROTECTION AMENDMENT RESOLUTION NO. �Z Q St. Croix County, Wisconsin WHEREAS, Senators Grothman and Schultz and Representatives Woods and Gard are proposing the Wisconsin Taxpayer Protection Amendment, a state constitutional amendment to limit government spending; and WHEREAS, such an amendment would limit a county's levy rate to the rate of inflation and the growth in population; and WHEREAS, such limitations would endanger all non - mandated services, including those that are designed to prevent utilizing more expensive services, to residents of St. Croix County (such as Alternatives to Incarceration); and WHEREAS, local elected officials are in a better position to understand the local needs of residents than state legislators; and WHEREAS, local elected officials are directly accountable to the electorate and can be removed by their electors; and WHEREAS, the Wisconsin legislature has a history of encouraging local control, which is in contrast to this legislation; and WHEREAS, St. Croix County had the 66 lowest property tax levy rate in 2005 out of the 72 counties in the state; and WHEREAS, St. Croix County has been a leader in providing services to its residents in innovative and responsible ways while being responsive to taxpayers and the community. THEREFORE, be it resolved that the St. Croix County Board of Supervisors opposes restricting local spending through the Wisconsin Taxpayer Protection Amendment. FURTHER, be it resolved that copies of this resolution be forwarded to all state legislators in the State of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Counties Associations. Offered by the Finance Committee.
