OLD AND NEW BUSINESS
• Drug Endangered Children Steve reported on an initiative to address the issue
of drug endangered children in St. Croix and Pierce Counties. All are invited to
attend the meeting and lunch at the Hudson Hospital on Tuesday July 31 from
11:00 -2:00 PM. Kitty Rhoades and Sheila Harsdorf will be attending. RSVP to
Karen Hanson at the Hudson Hospital.
• Goals & Strategies Denise suggested that at our next meeting we take time to
brainstorm goals and strategies. Steve will facilitate the discussion.
• Drug Court Update: Amber reported that Joan Sprain from UW Extension will
begin in September providing one -to -one financial education for participants.
Amber is also considering planning a picnic for participants, families and our
committee. It will include recognition of the sponsors...
• Future Events: Denise Gunderson reported that MADAM did not make it to the
St. Croix & Polk Co. Fairs. Needed proof of insurance and didn't have enough
staff/volunteers to make it happen. Maybe at Ox Cart Days and Heritage Days.
Discussion turned to the continued need for education and awareness because the
public thinks meth isn't a problem anymore. Sheriff Hillstead reported that there
has been one lab found, 1 major distributor resulting in a Federal arrest, and 120
in jail compared with 168 in May of 2005. There is a pipeline from MN to St.
Croix Co. but many of the arrests occur in MN.
• Butterfly House Update: Denise shared that they received a $6,000 WESTCAP
grant for house repairs. Another $8,000 was obtained from the Hugh J. Anderson
Foundation. All of the women are working. Five dentists in St. Croix Falls will
do pro bono dental work for the residents. Many are Department of Corrections
clients but don't have treatment goals tied to them. Buttery Fly House has the
requirement of 1 meeting per day which is not necessarily related to treatment and
Butterfly House is not licensed as a treatment center. Denise stated the mission
of Butterfly House is to serve residents out of treatment to help them maintain
health.
• Brainstorm New Educational Activities for Committee The committee
informally discussed additional ideas. Tom Caflisch suggested we look at the
distribution of more brochures. Esther added that we should include churches and
youth pastors. We also discussed other issues like teaching seniors ways to
dispose of pharmaceuticals. The Aging Department and HCE through UW
Extension are networks to deliver the information. Other discussion focused on
the role of parents in intervening in the problem of underage drinking and trying
to get help. Other parents are part of the problem and encourage alcohol and drug
use.
• Other items Tom Hennes shared the resource directory from Operation Help.
His 5013C is almost completed.
• Agenda for August We will brainstorm goals and strategies that our committee
could work on. Steve Kirt will facilitate the discussion.
Esther Wentz adjourned the meeting at 4:20 pm.
Respectfully Submitted, Joan Sprain
