September 24, 2007
Chair Esther Wentz called the meeting to order.
Members Present: Esther Wentz, Tom Hennes, Tom Caflisch, Ann Davey, Steve Kirt,
Erick Johnson, Bill Cranmer and Joan Sprain. .
OLD AND NEW BUSINESS
• Drug Court Update: Joan Sprain, UW Extension, reported that they have begun
providing one -to -one financial education for participants.
• Butterfly House: No one was present to report.
• Goals & Strategies Steve Kirt led the discussion. Based on the discussion at the
last meeting the mission has been broadened to include all drugs including alcohol
use. We will also use the verb reduce versus eliminate in our mission and
communication.
Steve shared some stats for us to think about.
Wisconsin leads the nation in binge drinking. Northwestern WI leads the state. Alcohol
is seen as a gateway drug. The critical issue is teenage binge drinking
Discussion focused on having a narrow focus and the need to find out what is already
happening: what kind of programs, where they are delivered and the target audience.
Joan Sprain volunteered UW Extension's student intern from UW Stout to contact
schools and community youth groups to find out what's happening. Steve will look at
adult programs.
Our second step will be to look at the existing data regarding alcohol use. Ann will look
at what programs are not effective.
All of this will be brought to out next meeting for further discussion.
Esther Wentz adjourned the meeting at 4:15 pm.
