Horticulture Educator Report
Ruth Hilfiker, the Horticulture Educator (50 %) gave her spring Progress Report for March —
June 2006. She explained her educational goals and projects for commercial horticulture in St.
Croix and Pierce Counties and for home horticulture programming in St. Croix County. A
Power Point presentation was given with pictures of some of the growers with whom Hilfiker
has been working.
4 -H Youth Development Report
•This summer Casey has been working on a variety of activities, the two that
she has spent the most time with are the older 4 -H Camp and the Family
Fun Day events. Casey attended camp counselor training and made a lot
of the preparations prior to attending Older Camp. Two Family Fun Day
events have been held in North Hudson; at both of these Casey planned
and taught sessions on Rocketry (in June), and Theatre Arts (in July).
Some of the other activities Casey has been involved with were: the
organization and presentation of the State Youth Conference Orientation,
completing and sending off State Fair Entries for St. Croix County
Exhibitors, entering Junior Fair and Open Class Entries, Farm City Day
planning meeting, and helping with the Tractor Safety test and Contest.
*The two primary activities that Brungardt has been involved in are planning
the Wisconsin Tour and 4 -H Camp. La Crosse, Wisconsin was selected as
the Wisconsin Tour destination this year and a hotel and charter bus
were reserved for the trip. Brungardt researched the fun and educational
activities offered in the area and developed an itinerary of exciting things
to do. Brungardt promoted the trip with an article in the newsletter and
has been busy registering people since. 4 -H Camp is a big event that
Brungardt worked on. She met with Chris Viau the 4 -H agent from Dunn
County and the summer assistants from Dunn and Polk counties to plan
Camp Counselor Training. Brungardt found cooking and baking
resources for the camp counselors to use to generate ideas for their
sessions during camp. Brungardt attended and supervised Camp
Counselor Training and 4 -H Younger Camp. Other activities Brungardt
has been working on include: Family Fun Day, Clothing Construction
Workshop, Dairy Fitting and Showing Clinic, Clothing Revue, Foods Fair,
Explorer /Cloverbud Day Camp, and recruiting fair helpers.
*Camping Program -82 campers and 32 youth counselors participated in 4 -H
summer camp. Discussion is still occurring about the feasibility of
combining the two age groups to reduce the transportation cost.
•Shooting Sports Program — 8 additional hours of training at a state level is
required to be a 4 -H shooting sports leader. We have one leader in .22
rifle and one in archery. This summer a competitive shoot for the county
fair has been added and will be held July 16 at Willow River Rod and Gun
Club.
•Grow 4 -H Initiative — three Family Fun Days are being conducted over the
summer to introduce new families to the opportunities available through
4 -H. Reaman received a $500 grant from the WI 4 -H Foundation to
cover the cost of supplies for the Family Fun Days. This fall, Rachel
Ackley, the Grow 4 -H Coordinator will conduct a random phone survey to
research how families in the Hudson area learn about opportunities that
their children participate in so that marketing of 4 -H can be targeted in
successful ways.
Norton- Baumann moved to adjourn. Peavey seconded.
Respectively submitted,
Eugene Ruetz
Secretary
