Box 138 River Falls, WI 54022 RE: Septic evaluation at 674 County Road M Legal Description: E Y�, SE Y4, Sec. 34, T28N -R19W, Town of Troy Dear Mr. Boles: On November 6, 1998, an inspection of the septic system on the Douglas Black and Patricia Prince property, 674 County Road M, Wisconsin, was conducted. No existing permit information could not be found, so the date of installation and size of the system is unknown. At the time of the inspection, the sanitary system appeared to be functioning properly, however there was approximately 75 inches of sewage effluent ponded in the drywell. The total depth of the drywell was 116 inches from grade. I did not observe any effluent discharging to the surface. Ponding of sewage effluent (liquid) in the soil absorption system (SAS) could indicate that the SAS is reaching its life expectancy, but not system failure. The homeowner did indicate that they have the septic tank and drywell pump by Johnson Sanitation on a monthly basis. The last pumping occurred in mid - October of 1998. Ponding results when microscopic bacteria and sludge plug the soil pores forming a clogging mat. This clogging mat decreases the soil's ability to dispose of the sewage effluent. Over time, this clogging mat becomes thicker, causing less and less liquid to percolate through the system. As this mat becomes progressively thicker it leads to failure of the system. To prolong the life of the system could be as simple as fixing or replacing plumbing fixtures with water conserving fixtures, reducing shower time, washing dishes when the dish washer is full, avoid using a garbage disposal, using a wash machine with a suds saver feature, etc. When the septic tank manhole covers terminates above grade it must have a locking device, and warning labels regarding the dangersthazards present when entering a sewage treatment tank. Code does allow for the manhole cover to be buried with soil no deeper than six inches, making sure that it's accessible for servicing per Comm 83.15 Septic tanks and other treatment tanks (g)(3a) and (h). The inspection of this sewage disposal system was based on a surface inspection of said system, and did not involve any excavation or chemical analysis. Accordingly, there is the possibility of hidden defects in the system not discoverable by this inspection. This does not in any way warrant or guarantee the continued proper functioning or operation of this system. It is recommended that the system should be pumped once every three years. Therefore, the prolonged life of this system may be dependent upon proper maintenance of the system. Should you have any questions, please contact this office. Septic system repairs When: Mid summer 1993 What: I was called by Darrel Dunn, of Darrel's Septic service in River Falls to excavate a possible broken 4 sewer line. Upon exposing the line it wqs found to be clogged, and cracked from excavation equipment. The section olf .pipe was replaced, and the septic tank was pumped. All excovated areas were restored by owners. 1 did not notice any signs of a failing system, missing of broklen baffles, or saturation of the, drain field.
