Duncan, Thursday, July 6, 2006 COPIES TO County Board Office County Clerk News Media/ Notice Board Committee Members 1 COUNCIL ON AGING MEETING July 13, 2006 St. Croix County Government Center CALL TO ORDER: Council Vice - Chairperson Jeannette O'Connell called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. Pledge of Allegiance was said. ROLL CALL: Members present were: Gerald Peterson, Charles Grant, John Mortensen, Judy Harrison, Carolyn Wiesenberger, Bette Norman, Art Feyeriesen, Rich Peterson, and Jeanette O'Connell. Also present were: Kjersti L.O. Duncan, Tracy Davis, Renea Aeschliman, Chris Michel, Ashley Ritter, Julie Hillstead, Donna Lamson, Janice Thompson, Shirley Marlette, Sallie Dull, Marcia Chandler, Lorraine Jacobs, and Vivian Kemling. Excused were Al Schrank, Ralph Bader, and Irene Burch. ACTION OF PREVIOUS MINUTES: A motion on the minutes was made by Carolyn Wiesenberger and seconded by Art Feyeriesen to approve the minutes; motion carried. DATE OF NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, August 17, 2006. Introductions: Kjersti introduced Chris Michel to the Council. Chris is the Department on Aging's new Outreach Coordinator. Chris' initial schedule will be: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 2:00 p.m. — 5:00 p.m. and Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m. — 5:00 p.m. Chris will visit those individuals who participate in the home - delivered meals program; she will set up visits soon. To assist her with scheduling these visits, Chris asked the Nutrition Program Managers to ask the Van Drivers to map out their meal delivery routes. Kjersti also introduced Ashley Ritter as the Department on Aging's Summer Intern. St. Croix County was chosen, along with eight other host sites, to participate in this "College -to- Work" program through the Wisconsin Foundation for Independent Colleges'. As a social work student entering her sophomore year at Marion College in Fond du Lac, Ashley received a scholarship for this internship through the Retirement Research Foundation. Ashley has spent her summer internship attending the Senior Center Board meetings, participating in the District 6 CWAG meeting, delivering meals in Hudson, assisting with the DayAway respite program, etc. Council on Aging Page 1 09/07/06 OLD BUSINESS: District 6 CWAG meeting: Ashley reported that 17 people from St. Croix County attended the District 6 CWAG meeting on June 23 at the Heritage Center in New Richmond. Consequently, St. Croix County had the largest representation at this meeting. Bureau for the Blind and the Center for Independent Living presented at this meeting. Legislators and state representatives were also present. The meeting was very informative and well attended. Brown Bag Lunch Session: To date, the Department on Aging has hosted three Brown Bag Lunch sessions; numbers of participants have continued to increase. The Department is pleased persons "new" to our services have been in attendance. Attached is a sheet with upcoming sessions. Kjersti asked the council to promote the sessions in their local communities. St. Croix County Fair: The fair starts next week and the theme is "Everyone's Goin "'. This year, the St. Croix County Outstanding Older Adult Award will be presented at the Croix Court during the fair on Friday, July 21 at 2:35 p.m. As a fundraiser for the Senior Centers' congregate dining program, juice, water and popcorn will again be for sale at the Senior Citizens' building. We look forward to celebrating aging at this annual event! Keep your eyes open for famous people 60 years and older who might be at the fair and could utilize our services (including: Donald Trump, Paul McCartney, Loni Anderson, Dolly Parton, Sly Stallone, and the Fonz!) O Staffing Updates: Chris filled the Outreach Coordinators position. The Deer Park Cook's Assistant position was filled by Muriel Volkert. The Experience Works position at Deer Park was filled by Luretta Larson. Applicants are still being taken for the Roberts Nutrition Program Manager. NEW BUSINESS: CWAG Medicare — August 16, 2006: A meeting addressing issues related to Medicare will be held at the Hudson Senior Center from 12:00 p.m. — 4:00 p.m. The cost for the meeting, lunch and material will be $2.00 and is open to the public. The session will cover how to read a Medicare summary sheet and other informative information. Please see the attached flyer for more information, as well as the phone number to call to make a reservation. Nutrition Program Managers Regional Training: This year's training will take place on September 28 in Rice Lake. This training is mandatory for all Nutrition Program Managers. Nutrition Program Managers should plan accordingly. More information will follow. Volunteer Report: Please see attached sheet. Council on Aging Page 2 09/07/06 I STAFF REPORTS: Kiersti's Report: Due to weather projections for very hot summer weather, Kjersti handed -out a flyer on Heat Stroke for the Nutrition Program Managers to post at the Senior Centers. She also reminded them, during these hot weeks, it is important to have water on the tables for participants, and to encourage them to get extra fluids. The consequences of over - heating are especially dangerous for older adults. Kjersti is developing and restructuring performance evaluation forms for all Department on Aging employees. When performance evaluations are scheduled, a copy of the evaluation will be sent to the employee to review and comment to ensure a self - evaluation is done to assist with professional /personal goal setting. Kjersti will also come with a completed evaluation to discuss. Kjersti is hoping to start the evaluation process in August. August is also the month for the 2007 Budget and the Aging Unit Plan. Next month's meeting will focus on these topics. Tracy's Report: On June 21 a transportation meeting was hosted by the Department on Aging. The focus of the meeting was to assess Human Service transportation needs in St. Croix County, not specifically the Department on Aging's transportation programs. This meeting was facilitated by Don Cush, West Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission, and Tracy Davis, Department on Aging. Approximately 22 people from individual agencies (both public and private) attended the meeting. Overall, in St. Croix County, transportation is an issue of concern for many. Suggestions for goal setting will be included in the final document /summary complied by Don Cush. Tracy will share Don's conclusions when it is received by the Department on Aging. The new van (that was ordered last spring) arrived earlier than expected! The van will be able to carry 14 ambulatory individuals or 12 ambulatory individuals and one person in a wheelchair. The Hudson Senior Center will receive the new van. A "van rendezvous" will be set up soon, by Tracy, to determine where the old Hudson van should go. The vans will be available to bring participants to the fair next week. Since the event is a Department on Aging sponsored event, the fare will be a donation. The 3 rd of the 4 th SuperValu distributions, through OEM, took place in Woodville. Lots of goods were donated to the cooking sites, community meal sites, and the local food pantries. All thank you notes should be written to United Way, SuperValu, and OEM. Tracy will collect these notes in August at the Center Board meetings. SITEXENTER REPORTS: BALDWIN: The June Bug parade was a lot of fun. Three bands are scheduled for the month of July. Show -n -Tell Day was well received; participants want to do that again. Sallie expressed thanks for the Spring Hat Day pictures. A circus clown will entertain at the next birthday party. Sallie is working on getting more information about the Senior Center in the Baldwin Bulletin Council on Aging Page 3 09/07/06 DEER PARK: On July 3 rd the Senior Center was decorated in patriotic colors, including red, white, and blue candies on the tables. A well -written article was written by the New Richmond News regarding the Senior Center. Photos were taken of participants celebrating PJ Day, and the article focused on all the fun that is enjoyed at the Senior Center. The Senior Center Board did very well selling red, white, and blue glow sticks at the annual Lions Club event. Jan thanked Kjersti for the additional support at Deer Park from the new Cook's Aide and Experience Works worker. GLENWOOD CITY: The Bingo days are going well with 40 -45 people in attendance. The entertainment planned for the July 4 th celebration cancelled. Cards are not going so well due too many other in -home card parties. Ole & Lena entertained and it was fun. Currently the Glenwood City Senior Center is getting ready for the fair. HAMMOND: All activities are going well. The participants enjoy the monthly word games and the prizes they receive at the end of the month. The CWAG meeting was attended by six participants; they found it informative and fun and enjoyed the picnic. There are plans to join the Roberts' Senior Center for the Seniors' Nite Out. A trip to the Spring Valley Theatre is planned for July 23 ROBERTS: Things are going really well. Bingo is played every other Wednesday. The Seniors' Night Out is planned for July 20 Participants should bring a dish to pass and a friend. In August, a pie & ice cream social will be planned some time after lunch. The Roberts Site will participate with Hammond in the Heartland Days Parade. The Senior Center members will be serving lunch for the Hammond Lions Club Art fair in August. HUDSON: Hudson van was in the Hudson Booster Day parade. NEW RICHMOND: Attendance is picking up. There is one person on the home - delivered meal route that is out of the range for the van driver, so a volunteer delivers that meal. John and Maureen Brunner entertained for the 4th of July celebration. The site plans on attending the fair on Friday, July 21 ". The Annual Polka Picnic Bash is scheduled for August 25 at the Star Prairie Park. The Polka Notes will be the entertainment for the day. RIVER FALLS: The Foot Clinic is going beautifully on the 4 Wednesday of every month. The Farmer Market Vouchers for Pierce County are going. A new volunteer has been attending the Senior Center and playing the organ. Margaret Ann Bosman will speak at the River Falls Senior Center in October. The River Falls Hospital, United Hospital, and local EMTs will do a presentation at the September meeting on 911. SOMERSET: July 3 Betty Phillipo played the piano. To celebrate PJ day, four ladies attended the Council on Aging Page 4 09/07/06 Senior Center in their PJs. The next "Lunch Out" destination is the Trap Rock in Dresser on July 14 Bingo is going well. WOODVILLE: The Woodville Senior Center Board received a $1500 donation from the Ann Marie Foundation. The donation will be used to purchase a new bingo machine. On July 7 17 people went to Chippewa Falls to tour the Linekuegal Brewery. They also toured Chippewa Falls while looking for the restaurant. Another trip will be planned at the end of August. A trip to Como Park will be planned for the fall. Salad Bar Luncheon is scheduled for September. The Woodville Library has a $300 grant for the Seniors to use for guest speakers or entertainment. 4 people will be attending the Roberts Senior Night Out on the 20 Last week's outreach program involved calling and inviting new people to visit the site to enjoy hospitality and banana splits — approximately 30 people attended. VAN TRIPS: Hammond to Spring Valley on July 23 Hudson to Como Park in July Somerset to Dresser on July 14 Disability Coalition Camp July 28 — 30 Disability Coalition Dance in Baldwin September ?
