other departments are consistent in entries compared to last year. There are many volunteer
opportunities at the fair, some require a couple of hours time and others require an all day
commitment. The Tiffany Creek project looks beautiful and is very near completion.
4 -H Youth Development Agent's Report
Positive Youth Development Through Camping Programs — Reaman and Vanderloop
reported on the purposes of counselor training: 1) preparing counselors to work effectively with
campers and 2) gaining leadership skills through planning and implementing the camp program.
Preparing counselors to work effectively with campers involves several aspects: creating the
cabin environment; redirecting behavior before discipline is necessary; keeping campers safe and
healthy. Reaman shared part of a lesson she taught on stereotypes and how stereotypes can
hinder communication. Vanderloop shared what she personally gained through her experiences
as a counselor and then in the Jr. Director role in her last year of 4 -H.
Update of other Summer Programs — Reaman reported on the 4 -H Interstate Exchange, the
camp program and registrations for the WI State Fair.
Agricultural Agent's Report
Milligan was asked by a lender at AgStar to give a presentation to their staff on compost barns
for dairy cattle. Eighteen people participated in the presentation. The participants learned what
compost barns are, how they are managed and the cost of building and operating. Discussions
are occurring regarding a tour to Western Minnesota to see the barns in August.
Sixty -seven people participated in a Livestock Facilities Tour coordinated and taught by
Milligan. Participants toured the Jim Lund and Rudy Erickson farms. The tour focused on safe
and efficient livestock handling facilities. Topics also included an update on bovine spongiform
encephalopathy, USDOT truck registration, beef quality assurance and livestock identification
issues.
Milligan continues to work with Tom Wells, Farm City Day general chairman, and the
committee on Farm City Day preparations at the Lokker Farm in August.
Milligan coordinated the 4 -H dairy Fitting and Showing day at the Mitchell's. Thirteen youth
and adults participated.
Milligan has two dairy producers participating in the Milk Money program. The goal is to
improve profitability by reducing the somatic cell count and incidence of mastitis.
Milligan is working on several committees for planning educational activities for the next several
months. These include: Farm Technology Days, Diagnostic Crop Clinic, Corn Silage Day,
Growing Wisconsin Farmers and the Ag Lenders Conference.
Individual contacts include; cropland rent, building designs, dairy nutrition, livestock facilities,
milk quality and other crop and livestock questions.
Future programs include farm business analysis, forage management, dairy nutrition and
livestock housing/facilities.
