ROLL CALL Members pr sent were: Gerald Peterson, Irene Burch, Richard (Buzz) Marz If, John Mortensen, Alice Mullan, Carolyn Weisenburger, Ralph Bader, Rich Peterson, and Jeanette O'Connell. Also present were: Kjersti L.O. Duncan, Tracy Davis, Renea Aeschliman, Julie illstead, Jan Thompson, Donna Lamson, Lorraine Jacobs, Al Schrank, Shirley Marlette, Sallie Dull, Marcia Chandler, and Bette Norman. Excused was Art Feyeriesen. ADOPTION OF AGENDA A motion was made by Richard Peterson and seconded by Jo Mortensen to adopt the agenda as printed; motion carried. DATE OF NEXT MEETIN : The next meeting will be held on Thursday, October 20 2005 lease note corrected date from last month's a ends ACTION OF PREVIOUS MINUTES: A motion on the amended minutes was made b John Mortensen and seconded by Irene Burch to approve the min tes; motion carried. Introductions: Sue Kramer, SCC Benefit Specialist, handed out flyers which are being di tributed at local senior housing units during her Medicare Pa D information sessions. Sue requested that Nutrition Progr m Managers hand - deliver these flyers to apartment units where sessions are not scheduled. More information is to come. Council on Aging Page {1 10/27/05 ` A N � �0 I UNFINISHED BUSINESS Transportation: Tracy met 'with the Transportation Committee prior to Council to discuss the new transportation brochure. The brochure, which explains the site transportation program, will be available on the vans for patticipants to take home. It outlines transportation policies and fares. The cost of round trips exceeding 60 miles will inid e from $5.00 to $10.00. Carolyn Weisenburger recommendo approve the increase. This recommendation was alsroved by Gerald Peterson and John Mortensen. The reco ndation passed. Budget Process: Budgmbers were updated from last month's meeting; more ac numbers were available as they relate to salaries. The tax request decreased due to these changes, as well as less th4n predicted liability costs. The department's overall budget increase from last year's request was a 2% increase. Gerald eterson requested that Kj ersti ask the Finance Committee wha will happen if the increase in wages is more than 2% which is currently the budgeted amount. Whose responsibility will it be to cover the 1% difference? Kjersti will meet in front of the Finance Committee on Wednesday, October 28 fro 11:00 a.m. — 11:30 a.m. NEW BUSINESS: Upcoming Events: Septem er 13 will be the kick -off for United Way's fall campaign. United Way requested that the Department on Aging host t eir campaign managers training event. Campaign managers ill come to the Hudson Senior Center for training and lunch. Representatives from the Center Boards and Nutrition Sites a e also invited to attend to help explain how the United Way �nding is used on behalf of the area's older adults. II The Caregiver Conferen e will be on September 22n Please submit all registratio4s as soon as possible. The Council on Aging Page12 05 10 27 / / I 1 I Nutrition Sites will be closed for the day. The Nutrition Programs Managers will attend a regional training on Thursday, September 29 in Rice Lake. Transportation will be pro ided with two pick -up sites — Baldwin Senior Center at 6:30 a.m. and the Crossroads Restaurant at Four Corners at 6:45 a.m. On September 30 a an Driver's training /meeting on evacuation procedures will b held. Registration will be at 9:00 a.m. in the Government enter's Community Room. A continental breakfast and lun h will be provided. National Eat Together eek is October 3 rd — 7th Nutrition Program Managers should be creative and think of ways to get more participants to come in nd eat with the group to honor the week. Encourage participa s to share memories of favorite meals. The Monster Mash Bash ill be October 28 at the Roberts Senior Center from 2:00 p. . — 5:00 p.m. Door prizes and prizes for the best dressed wi 1 be given. More information to follow. Aging Unit Plan: Kjersti pr�sented a hand -out which outlines the mission and responsibilities of the Department on Aging. This hand -out will be given t the Finance Committee prior to budget hearings. Kjersti mad specific additions and omissions to the original narrative. Co ncil members were asked their opinions regarding the change . Richard Marzolf suggested the mission of the Council on A ing be added. John Mortensen suggested additional explanati ns be provided regarding Faith in Action and DayAway. Hudson Nutrition Program ro osal: Without representation of the Hudson Senior Center, he issue of reducing the number of meals per week from 5 to # has been tabled until October. This proposal was suggested to� help offset increased meal costs Council on Aging Page�3 10/27/05 � 1 i` Y + I { and decreased budget. Disc *ssion arose as to whether Friday is the best choice of days for closure; not just at the Hudson site, but the other nutrition sitgs as well. Surveys need to be conducted to determine 'participants' and the Nutrition Program's needs. Volunteer Report: The Vis ally Impaired Outreach Program is in need of readers for local n wspapers on tape in the Glenwood City and Hammond areas. T e DayAway Club in Hudson is in need of volunteers on Monda s and Thursdays. STAFF REPORTS Ki ersti's Report: Kj ersti has met with Dan Baker, Procurement, regarding the redesign of the office space. pana helped contact two vendors to look at the office space and oake proposals. The Department on Aging's goal is to create a ore welcoming and professional environment to clients and staf . Martha Mabis, UW Exte sion, will no longer be visiting the Nutrition Sites. The grant sh was working under is no longer available. ` I Tracf s Report: I SITE /CENTER REPORTS BALDWIN Sallie is glad to e back at work, the volunteers did a great job while she was out. 'An art group will start next week. A Halloween party, with the ayshakers, is planned for October 27 at the Senior Center. I October, there will be 2 bands coming to entertain. Some pa icipants are going to accompany individuals from the Amery enior Center on a trip to Door County starting on September 2 na DEER PARK The special da s of the month on the menu have been greatly appreciated. The ( Wizard of Oz was fun with the Council on Aging Page 4 10/27/05 ' Grannies and the movie. The Back to School theme will take place all week, not just one d4y. The St. Croix Falls trip has been rescheduled to September 9tm due to the number of people that would like to attend. Tracy s ggested that a, day be designated for shopping to help participants Ian ahead. GLENWOOD CITY: Bingo is going really well. Cards will start picking up in the fall. Exerci e program members have increased by a few more. The Con egate and Home - Delivered Meal programs have had some ne participants. The special activity suggestions have been lots f fun. The Soup and Sandwich luncheon will be next month. '4 The site van will be in the Rustic Lore parade. I HAMMOND: All activities 4re going well. Movie night in New Richmond was fun. Martha Mabis visited last month. Several participants enjoyed ice cre at American Heritage Nursing Home. September 20, Eg en's Grocery in Baldwin will be catering the indoor picnic. ROBERTS August 27 as the fundraiser for the Senior Center. Lunch was served at tl }e town craft sale. October 7 th a trip is scheduled to Como Park wit the Hammond participants. Cards will start back on Monday. Ju ie would like to start a board game tournament and `Spotlight on Senior Day'. On September 23r the Senior Nite Out will be a ancake breakfast from 5:30 p.m. — 7:30 p.m. HUDSON Not present for the meeting. NEW RICHMOND Not pre ent for the meeting RIVER FALLS: A volunteer is scheduled to come to the Senior Center to adjust individuals' ey glasses the same day as the Foot Clinic. AARP driving training vi►Till be held on October I th & 1 l Lots of veggies have been co ing in. Iry Heider, the organist, will be leaving soon for the win ter. SOMERSET Bingo is play4d every day. It was very enjoyable having Charlotte as the sub driver while Al was out ill. WOODVILLE: The Salad Luncheon will be held on September 16 from 11:00 a.m. — 1:0Q p.m. All are welcomed to attend. Blood pressure is scheduled f r once a month. The Wizard of Oz day went well. After the meal, a group visited a participant's home to watch the movie. Lots o participants brought in their year books for the Back- to -Sch of week.
