UNFINISHED BUSINESS
St. Croix County Fair: We received a lot of feedback that this year's fair was very fun. There was a
good turn -out in the Senior Building. We celebrated aging by rewarding everyone 60 years or older
with a prize for each "senior" decade. The goal was to emphasize the positive aspects of aging.
The awarding system for this year's Senior Class exhibits changed from prior years. Following
the "Danish System," everyone received a ribbon: either blue or red. Although this resulted in
recognition for all participants, it did cause some confusion.
NEW BUSINESS:
Introductions: Dianne Rhein, of AgeAdvantAge was very complimentary of the variety and quality
of services offered by the St. Croix County Department on Aging.
Upcoming Events: The Annual Caregiver Conference will be held on Thursday, September 22 at
Faith Community Church in Hudson. Meghan handed out posters and brochures for the Nutrition
Program Managers and Council members to hand -out, as well as post at the Senior Centers and other
places in town. Everyone was encouraged to personally invite potential participants to this event.
Vendor registrations are still coming in. Respite, at DayAway, will be made available the day of the
conference.
The Nutrition Program Managers were invited to attend regional training on Thursday, September
29 in Rice Lake. Kjersti put together an agenda /information brochure for the Nutrition Program
Managers. Transportation will be provided from pick -ups at two locations — Baldwin Senior Center
and the Crossroads Restaurant at Four Corners. Further information regarding pick -up times will be
shared at next month's council meeting.
An informative meeting regarding the "round - abouts" off of Hanley Road will be held on
Monday, August 22 in the Community Room of the Government Center at 1:30 p.m. The
Department on Aging has been asked to offer assistance educating the public regarding how to drive on
round - abouts.
On September 30 "', a Van Driver's training/meeting on evacuation procedures will be held. More
information will follow at next month's council.
Budget: Kjersti provided a PowerPoint presentation to the Council on the 2006 Department on
Aging's budget request. In 2005 the total budget was $781,644. For 2006, Kjersti made a request of
$795,897. For this next budgetary year, the Department on Aging will request increased funding from
the county for the Benefit Specialist position, Congregate Nutrition Programs, and Service
Management. Additional funding will also be required by the Department of Transportation; an
increase in the DOT grant results in an increased expectation for the county match. At the time of this
meeting, final figures were not made available from finance for staff salaries and benefits, as well as
liability costs. The Department on Aging's total request from the county levy will need to be adjusted
at that time.
Along with budgetary information for each program, Kjersti also outlined department goals and
objectives
The Council of Aging unanimously passed the budget as presented.
Volunteer Report: The Visually Impaired Outreach Program is in need of readers in the Glenwood
City and Hammond Area for local newspapers on tape. The DayAway Club in Hudson is in need of
volunteers on Mondays and Thursdays.
STAFF REPORTS
Kjersti's Report:
Kjersti informed the Council that the state has set the goal that in four years every county
in Wisconsin will have an Aging and Disability Resource Center. This information was passed
along to all Aging Directors at the last AgeAdvantAge /PSA meeting in Tomah. In order to
prepare for this transition, the recommendation was for Aging Units to emphasize the
following three programs: Information & Assistance, Preventative Health and the Caregiver
Program.
Kjersti also thanked Meghan for her various contributions to the Department on Aging.
Meghan did a great job as the Department's summer intern.
Tracy's Report: Kjersti and Tracy met with the St. Croix County Libraries Group. Kjersti
and Tracy will be writing a grant to purchase CVTVs to be placed in the local libraries. CVTVs
assist those with visual impairments to independently read books, letters, and other written
materials.
Meghan's Report: Meghan presented her intergenerational project to the New Richmond,
Glenwood City, and Baldwin /Woodville School Districts. The New Richmond School District
would like to focus on Seniors greeting middle school students in the early morning hours.
Baldwin /Woodville would like more concrete ideas. Glenwood City will look to the National
Honor Society or Student Council groups to assist and guide the program. Upon completion
of Meghan's summer internship, Tracy will continue to work on this project.
