COUNCIL ON AGING MEETING
October 20, 2005
St. Croix County Government Center
CALL TO ORDER Coun it Chairman Ralph Bader called the
meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. ledge of Allegiance was said.
ROLL CALL Members pr esent were: Gerald Peterson, Irene
Burch, Richard (Buzz) Marz lf, John Mortensen, Alice Mullan,
Carolyn Weisenburger, Al S prank, Ralph Bader, Rich Peterson,
and Jeanette O'Connell. Also present were: Kjersti L.O. Duncan,
Tracy Davis, Renea Aeschlinian, Julie Hillstead, Donna Lamson,
Lorraine Jacobs, Shirley Marlette, Sallie Dull, Marcia Chandler,
Vivian Kemling, Brian Camp ell of Life Screening, Theresa Jonas
and Dr. Michael Kretz with he Humane Society of Pierce & St.
Croix, Inc. Excused were Arty Feyeriesen and Bette Norman.
ADOPTION OF AGEND A motion was made by John
Mortensen and seconded b Jeanette O'Connell to adopt the
agenda as printed; motion carded.

DATE OF NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on
Thursday, November 10 2005.
ACTION OF PREVIOUS MINUTES: A motion on the
amended minutes was made by Rich Peterson and seconded by
Irene Burch to approve the minutes; motion carried.
Introductions: Brian Camp ell, Life Screening Representative,
handed out an information4l booklet on Life Screening. Life
Screening will be offering its services at the First Reformed
Church in Baldwin on November 11 Life Screening provides
preventative health screenings to individuals 40 years or older.
The preventative procedure are not currently covered under
insurance because they are considered to be elective.

Service Board; and Theresa Jonas, Volunteer Executive Director
of the Humane Society of Fierce & St. Croix, Inc., presented
information to the Council regarding reasons why the Humane
Society may not exist after D0cember of this year. The Humane
Society provides service to loth St. Croix County and Pierce
County residents, but receive'$ most of its funding from Pierce
County. Ms. Jonas gave a P werPoint presentation and offered
handouts to the members of th Council.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Budget Process Update: T e Benefit Specialist position was
not approved as a new Co my position for 2006; no new
positions were approved or this next budgetary year.
Consequently, the Benefit pecialist will continue to be a
contracted position. Kjersti a d Richard Marzolf met with the
Finance Committee on Septe ber 28 and were asked to cut the
overall budget an additional 13,500. Kjersti, with the help of
Michelle Petryk, Finance Di ector, was able cut $13,100 by
correcting liability and bene is costs, and adjusting costs for
DayAway meals. The differe ce will be made -up through fund-
raising efforts.
Caregiver Conference: The Caregiver Conference, which was
held September 22n was we 1 attended and very informative.
Approximately 100 people w re present to gather information
from 15 different vendors which included assisted living
facilities to life line represe tatives). The presenters shared
information regarding caregiv r issues including: guardianship,
Medicare Part D, and how to c re for one's self as a caregiver.
Nutrition Pro ram Mana a Re Tona Trainin Training,
on September 29 was heldl in Rice Lake and attended by
Janice Thompson, Julie Hill�tead, Shirley Marlette, Vivian
Kemling, Sylvia Heller, Kjersti Olson - Duncan and Al Schrank.
The day was filled with information and fun.

Driver Safety, Emer enc l and Evacuation Training: In
collaboration with drivers f om Pierce and Polk Counties, as
well as St. Croix Industries, Tracy Davis organized training for
Department on Aging Site Van Drivers on September 30
Drivers were trained on eme�gency and evacuation procedures
when working with the elderly and disabled.
NEW BUSINESS:
Upcoming Events: Monst r Mash Bash is to be held on
October 28 at the Roberts S nior Center from 2:00 p.m. — 5:00
p.m. The event will feature ger Heutmaker and the Hanyachs
and a costume contest. Loc 1 Senior Centers, nursing homes,
and assisted living facilities, long with the general public, were
invited.
The Holiday Memorial ssay Contest continues until its
November 1S deadline. Wi ers will be published in the
December issue of SCAN. Please be sure to get your essays in
as soon as possible to be judg d!
Medicare Part D info ational sessions had to be
rescheduled in some of the lo� al libraries due to a delay in the
implementation of the federall web tool. Updated posters were
given to the Nutrition Progra Managers to post so participants
are informed of these change . Updated information will also
be mailed to libraries, hospital, clinics, and pharmacies.

Hudson Nutrition Program �roposal: The Hudson Nutrition
Site participants were survey d to determine which day they
preferred to be closed in the opcoming year. After compiling
the survey responses, Monday t s chosen by the majority of the
participants. A motion was by Gerald Peterson stating
that in the year 2006 the Hon site will be open Tuesday
through Friday for congregate ning and home - delivered meals
due to budget constraints. The otion was seconded by Richard
Marzolf. Motion passed. I

Volunteer Report: The Vis4ally Impaired Outreach Program is
in need of readers for local newspapers on tape in the Glenwood
City and Hammond areas. T�e DayAway Club in Hudson is in
need of volunteers on Monda ` s and Thursdays.

Kiersti's Report:
Kj ersti is busy setting p Medicare Part D informative
sessions.
Tracy's Report: Vehicle inspections are set for November 11 at
7:45 a.m. at the Highway Dopartment in Hammond. The van
drivers will receive notices as o the time their vehicles will need
to be in Hammond. I
The public hearing for th� 85.21 Grant will be held at next
month's Council meeting at 9:3 a.m.
There will be two info ative meetings about the round-
about that is being built off H nley Road and Hihway 35. The
sessions will be held on Tue day, October 18 and Tuesday,
October 25 at St. Paul's Episc pal Church in Hudson.

SITEXENTER REPORTS
BALDWIN On December I S members of the Baldwin Senior
Center will attend a concert t the Amery Senior Center. A
Halloween Party is planned for October 27 at the Senior Center
with the Hayshakers enterta'ning. On November 22n a
"Thanksgiving Thank You inner" will be held to honor
volunteers who help at the Senior Center. The art club is meeting
again on Tuesdays and bing participants are increasing in
number. The Card party is pla ed for the third Wednesday of the
month. On November 2$ Loy from Public Health will inspect
the kitchen area. !,
DEER PARK The trip to St. roix Falls on September 9 was

fun. Martha Mabis visited tie site and played fruit and veggie
bingo. Cribbage and 500 are being played at the site.
GLENWOOD CITY: Bingo is going very well. The Soup
Luncheon was successful; approximately 100 people attended.
There were no flu shots last month. In mid - November the
Nutrition Program will be rel�cated for one week to Holy Cross
Lutheran Church due to repair on the community center's floor.
HAMMOND: All activities 4re going well. Currently the blood
pressure check has been disc ntinued. In November a bakeless
bake sale is planned. On ctober 29 a Halloween Party is
planned.
ROBERTS August 27 a draiser was held for the Senior
Center; $350.00 was raised. gn September 23r Senior's Night
Out featured a pancake supper ith cards and dominoes. Recently,
participants went on a leaf tri and to the Maple Leaf Orchard in
Spring Valley. Next week the will be having a small Halloween
and Fall party. November's Se iors Nite out will be on November
5 On November 23 a joint 0eal at the Hammond Senior Center
will take place due the annual blood drive by the American Red
Cross in the Robert's Park Buil ing.
HUDSON All activities are ' oing well. Last week's birthday
party featured Carol McConau hey's son -in -law who played the
guitar and sang. On Novembe 1S Laurie will conduct her annual
inspection of the kitchen area. ` Since the weather has been nice,
the participants have been out i �alking before lunch. All activities
are the same and all are enj oyin them.
NEW RICHMOND Everyt ing is going well. Participants
enjoyed a train ride from Osc ola to Marine on St. Croix even
though it was raining. Nanc Olson paints pumpkins and on
Halloween she is going to show the participants how to paint their
own. On November 10 an evening meal will honor local
Veterans. The American Leg on will host a presentation with
John and Maureen Brunner sin ing patriotic songs. In the future,

someone may come in to demonstrate stamping for cards and gift
bags. The Christmas party is scheduled for December 14 with
the Kitchen Band entertaining..
RIVER FALLS: Not present', for the meeting.
SOMERSET Everything is oing well. The Deerfield residents
will attend a little Hallowe n get - together at the site. On
November 23 there will be he Thanksgiving Day dinner with
John and Maureen Brunner ' entertaining. Children from St.
Anne's come once a month o make tray favors for the Holy
Family Hospital in New Richmond. Laurie completed her annual
inspection of the kitchen area.
WOODVILLE The Parkvie* residents came to play bingo and
eat lunch last Tuesday. Octobe� 25 is the Fall party; the Cardell's
will entertain. Bingo on TuesdI 4y s and Thursdays always seems to
have a rather large crowd.
