Also present were: Kjersti Olson, Tracy Davis, Renea Aeschliman, Gladys Ellefson, Sylvia Heller, Julie Hillstead, Vivian Kemling, Jan Thompson, Bette Norman, Marilyn Vanderpoel, Donna Lamson, and Bob Jacobson. Excused Esther Koosman. ADOPTION OF AGENDA A motion was made by Gerald Peterson and seconded by Rich Peterson to adopt the agenda as printed; motion carried. DATE OF NEXT MEETING The next meeting will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2005. ACTION OF PREVIOUS MINUTES A motion was made by John Mortensen and seconded by Jeanette O'Connell to approve the minutes; motion carried. UNFINISHED BUSINESS NEW BUSINESS: Transportation Policy: Tracy discussed the issues that need to be addressed, for the transportation program, involving policies on winter weather driving and passenger assistance. Tracy brought a policy to the council's attention, but felt it needed to be reviewed by the Transportation Committee before voted upon. The Transportation Committee will meet 15 minutes prior to the April meeting to review the proposed policies. Copies will be given to the council members to approve. NEW BUSINESS: Dates of Next Meetings: During the next few months a number of other events conflict with the Council on Aging's regularly scheduled meetings: the April meeting conflicts with the Volunteer Banquet; the May meeting conflicts with Senior Celebration; and the July meeting conflicts with the County Fair. A motion was made by Irene Burch to move the April meeting to the 14' of April and seconded by Jeanette O'Connell; motion carried. A motion was made by Gerald Peterson to move the May meeting to the 12` of May and seconded by John Mortensen; motion carried. A motion was by Rich Peterson to move the July meeting to the 10 of July and seconded by Irene Burch; motion carried. There is also a conflict with the September meeting that will be addressed at a later time. Upcoming Events: Volunteer Banquet will take place on Thursday, April 21" at The Valley House in North Hudson. Registration will start at 10:30 a.m. and a barber shop quartet will entertain the guests as they arrive. The day will consist of a buffet lunch, door prizes and the presentation of volunteer pins. Senior Celebration is planned for Thursday, May 19 and will be held at The Phipps Center for the Arts located downtown Hudson. The entertainment for the day has yet to be determined. The Faith in Action silent auction will be held the same day. This event is open to the public so please encourage others to come along. Registration will be around 8:30 a.m More details will follow. Faith in Action Report: Kjersti read Nancy's report on her behalf. There are individuals in need of friendly visitors and transportation throughout the county. Please review Nancy's report that is attached for your reference and contact Nancy if you or someone you know is interested in volunteering. Hammond/Roberts Center Board: It was brought to Kjersti's attention that there has been discussion at the Hammond/Roberts Center Board regarding the creation of two separated center boards. The council approved the formation of one center board to oversea the two nutrition sites since each is open 2 days a week and one complimentary day. Julie Hillstead, the Roberts Nutrition Program Manager, the center boards should stay combined. She stated that there is not enough commitment at this time to support a separate center board. Irene Burch, chairperson of the Hammond/Roberts center board, has no objection staying combined if that is what Roberts would like. STAFF REPORTS Nancy's Report: AFCSP (Alzheimer Family Caregiver Support Program) monies are being handled by Nancy. We contract with Health and Human Services for these monies. AFCSP assists families who have a loved one with dementia. AFCSP funding helps meet needs that they may not be able to finance on their own. Nancy completes an assessment and application process with those served by the program. Kiersti's Report: Kjersti informed the council members on some staff positions that are in need of filling. Currently there are four positions — Outreach Coordinator /Temporary Benefit Specialist Assistant, ACCESS Grant temporary position, the Baldwin Site Manager and New Richmond Van Driver position. The Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for the homebound assessments. He /she will also assist in assessing the needs of those individuals affected by upcoming Medicare changes. Federal monies have filtered down to the counties to assist individuals impacted by these changes by increasing Benefit Specialist Hours and /or hiring additional staff. We have decided to combine the two positions to better serve our clients. The second position has no title yet. It is funded through a temporary grant. The individual in this position will be responsible for sharing information on the services our department provides and increasing our department's visibility. The person will be in contact with public access stations, newspapers, and other mediums to network to and to get the "word out" regarding the resources we provide. There is currently an individual interested. More information will follow. A psychology student, named Megan Gehr, from St. Mary's College in Winona is interested in being a student intern. She is looking to intern in our office throughout the summer months. Tracy s Report: Tracy thanked all those that helped in the United Way presentations. They all did a wonderful job. No current updates regarding Unite Way funding. Card tournaments start up on Wednesday, March 23rd with Woodville kicking it off. Baldwin, Deer Park, Somerset, Hudson, and New Richmond need to turn in their inventories. Please get them in as soon as possible. SITE /CENTER REPORTS BALDWIN Bingo last week brought in 22 people. Things seem to be going well. DEER PARK Held their center board meeting last week. Thank you to Carolyn and Mavis for representing the Deer Park Senior Center at the United Way presentation. During the month of April they would like to go to Cabella's in Owattana, MN. For the trip they would like the use of the Baldwin Site van. If there is enough room, after the Deer Park participants sign up other participants from other towns can also up. GLENWOOD CITY: Not present to report. HAMMOND: All activities are going very well. Blood pressure is once a month. Started using the new dishwasher and it going well. A trip is being planned to the Johnquist Family Kitchen in Baldwin sometime in the month of April. Several participants are looking forward to the upcoming card tournaments. The St. Patrick's Day party is planned for this afternoon. ROBERTS John Mikla entertained at the site on March 2 °d . Bingo is doing excellent right now. Senior Night Out will be once a month with a potluck dinner and bingo. March's night out is planned for the 31". A senior dance is being planned for May 13` with John Mikla entertaining again. The dance is open to all of the Senior Centers. A spring get together is being planned with the Hammond Senior Center. In April they would like to go to Hudson for shopping and lunch. HUDSON Everything is going well. Bingo attendance has increased possibly due to the change from dimes to door prizes. Blood pressure, foot care and massage are doing good. Started story time or reminisce time with coffee. Exercise has started. An individual has been coming in on Fridays and playing the accordion during lunch. Some participants would like to go to the Red Barn on March 30` NEW RICHMOND Everything is going great. Today is the St. Patrick's Day party. On March 13` many attended the play Wizard of Oz at the Little Theatre and they all enjoyed it. Looking forward to playing cards. RIVER FALLS: The foot care clinic is on the third Wednesday of the month. Euchre and Cribbage are played on Wednesdays. 500 and Bridge are played on Fridays. AARP 55 Alive driving course will be taking place on Monday, April 11 and Tuesday, April 12"' from 10:00 a.m. — 2:30 p.m. Pancake breakfast is planned for April 17'' from 8:00 a.m. — 1:00 p.m. with a $5.00 charge for adults. A Volunteer Recognition Day is planned in the month of May. SOMERSET The 4 6 ' graders from St. Anne's come every P Tuesday of the month to play bingo and make tray favors. Blood pressure and lunch -out are held once a month and bingo is every day. Mondays and Wednesdays are exercise days. Looking forward to the card tournament. WOODVILLE Today is the St. Patrick's Day and March birthday party with Lucille Lund entertaining after lunch. Residents from the Park View Nursing Home attended the senior center for bingo. Blood pressure and bingo are going well. Tax assistance is done for the year.
