MEDIA COMMITTEE — Barbara said the goal for Meth Awareness Month was to submit an article to the newspapers each week in September. The first week was the Proclamation, the second week was a letter to the editor asking for interested organizations to link to the Advisory committee, the third week was on signs and symptoms and effects on the user and the last one will be on the impact of Meth production on the pharmacy consumers. Kathie Deatherage writes the last article. So far, the paper from Glenwood City is the only one to print the letter to the editor asking for interested organizations to link to the Advisory Committee. Gail and Jan from Work Force Connection saw the article. Steve has not heard form any other organizations. Barbara said that the printing of the articles is at the discretion of the newspaper, as we are not paying for the space. She asked board members to notify the Media Subcommittee when its sees an article in the paper. Newspapers will be thanked for printing articles. Doreen said a thank you was sent to the bank and the paper in New Richmond from MADAM. First National Bank advertised Meth Awareness Month on its message board and the New Richmond News published two front -page articles on Meth. All cable stations agreed to run September -Meth Awareness Month and some are willing to air videos and power -point presentations. Barbara suggested the power point prepared by Eric Johnson, DA be aired on Cable. Also, she suggested that this power point be presented to the Advisory Committee next meeting, as not all have viewed it. Businesses that had message boards were contacted and were displaying messages about Meth Awareness Month. For example, the First National Banks in Hudson and New Richmond and WITC in New Richmond. WITC has scheduled someone to speak on the issue of Meth. The subcommittee will be looking into "radio spots" to increase awareness about Meth. Denise asked if we could find a dentist to write an article on the effects of Meth on the mouth and teeth. Esther will ask her dentist in New Richmond (Dr. Mike) if he will write an article. B. BOOTH COMMITTEE - This committee has been busy with local events such as Wheels and Wings in Osceola, Heritage Days, the Bee Farm, and High School Open House. Esther said that the Teacher Kids Company in New Richmond took. MADAM's card and would like info on Meth. This is an organization that works with kids at risk in grades 2 -6. Doreen told the group about two very touching stories about kids who shared that their parents where either on Meth or liked Meth . These stories came from kids who were hanging around the booths. C. BROCHURE COMMITTEE - Katie had finished the second draft of the brochure, which she passed around for the group to review. She said she needed website resources from the Research Committee. We briefly discussed where to distribute the brochure such as the school guidance offices, Work Force Connections, County Government Center and public libraries. D. RESEARCH COMMITTEE- this committee does not meet until Friday September 30 th E. COMMUNITY LINKAGE- Steve said he did not get a response from the news article. He will plan a meeting following today's meeting and work on new strategies. PHOTO OF METH SIGN AND COMMITTEE MEMBERS - There is a new anti -Meth road sign available. Each sign is $150 and need sponsors. The newspapers would like someone to be holding the sign when they print this information. St. Croix Courrty members cannot ask for donations so it is better to have private citizens who are sponsoring a sign be in the picture. The sign says: Meth Cooks, Dealers and Users One size fits all (Hand Cuffs) Turn `em in 715- 381 -4320 Esther says the townships want signs. Star Prairie has purchased one from Parks money. Dennis said the Town Board Association is a good place to discuss the signs. Steve suggested that Star Prairie explain why and how they purchased a sign at the next meeting of the townships. Esther will follow up on this. TREASURER'S REPORT - Doreen reported $2164.60 and $300 not deposited yet. Esther suggested Doreen buy a cart and a T.V. to present the videos or DN'D's at community events. OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS; Dennis said that Polk County has a video on Meth that is very good.. Perhaps this and the DA's power point could be run on a cable station. The Family Resource Center is another good place to run a video or power point. The contact person is Patti Dralxer. Denise passed around a notebook of pictures she had copied from various police departments on meth labs and other paraphernalia. She displays this information at the booths to answer questions about how meth is made and how it's used. Denise would life a family support group and Steve would like a users support group at a non- church setting. Esther said WITC might have a room. She will follow -up on places to hold support meetings. POSSIBLE AGENDA ITEMS FOR NEXT MEETING: It was suggested that the Advisory Board be shown the DA's power point on Meth at our next board meeting. Meeting ended at 4:25 Respectfully Submitted by Linda M. Robertson
