UNFINISHED BUSINESS
There is no unfinished business so the meeting went directly to the subcommittee
updates.
NEW BUSINESS
SUBCOMMITTEE UPDATES:
A. MEDIA COMMITTEE — Barb said the weekly articles to the newspapers are
finished. Many newspapers have not printed the articles. Barb said the
subcommittee suggested that we establish a relationship with a reporter who will
be sympathetic to our mission and print articles on our behalf. Doreen will
continue her contact with the New Richmond paper that has written articles on
Meth. Linda will contact the Star - Observer in Hudson and Katie will contact
River Falls. We still need a contact for Baldwin, Woodville (the county's official
newspaper) and Glenwood City.
Linda was asked to contact Dana, counselor at the Hudson High School for more
information on the event on Saturday October 22 called "Walk Away from
Drugs ". Dana said that this event is organized by SAD (Students Against
Destructive Behavior). This is the third year and coincides with Red Ribbon
Awareness Week, which is the last full week in October (22 -28). Dana said she is
seeing less use of Meth at the Hudson High School. She thinks this is due to
educating the students about Meth. Also, those who use drugs are seeing the
negative effects of Meth on their peers and staying away from it.
Dana is interested in being a link with us and us with CCR (Coordinated
Community Response). She invited anyone whose interested to the next CCR-
Prevention and Education Committee on Nov. 17 At 12 N in the Willow Room,
Second Floor of the Hudson Hospital.
B. BROCHURE COMMITTEE- Katie is working on the third draft. When she is
finished she will give each committee member a copy for his or her review. She
has contacts with Lynn Akers from St. Croix Press. She will get cost estimates
from Lynn based on number of colors used in brochure, paper weight and number
of copies printed. Esther suggested four colors for the brochure. Esther
suggested that Dana Baker, the purchasing agent for the county get an alternative
bid.
David reminded the group that the Rotary Club is interested in financing the
brochure and the contact person is Mark Gherty.
Denise said the Linkage Subcommittee would like Katie to work on a flyer that
could be passed out at the booth events or other informational meetings asking
groups/ organizations to partner with us. Steve emphasized that we want
organizations not individuals.
C. BOOTH COMMITTEE- Doreen said there is a public forum on October 12 at
the Osceola Medical Center and she will be there. Also, she will be at the Middle
School in St. Croix Falls on October 26 Tim Schultz from the Department of
Narcotic Enforcement will be the speaker. There will be three presentations. On
Saturday October22, the Hudson High School is sponsoring a walk/run entitled
"Walk Away From Drugs" and MADAM will be walking in that event. She will
be attending a presentation by Dave Parnell at Ellsworth High School on Oct. 27
at 7pm. He is a former meth user who tried to commit suicide. He will tell his
story. You can visit his website at www.facethedragon.com
D. LINKAGE COMMITTEE — Steve said the committee would send out a letter to
organizations such as Rotary, Lions, and Ministerial Association etc inviting
agencies to help us. Steve will contact Norma to see if there is anyway to
collaborate with the United Way. Norma works for the county and is on the
United Way Board.
Esther will talk to Buck about coordinating a community calendar of schools,
villages, towns etc in order to find out what each is doing about Meth.
On Wed. Oct 12, Sheila Harsdorf and Dave McQuillen will be meeting with the
Milwaukee Chapter of Teen Challenge to discuss establishing a chemical
dependency treatment site in this area. Teen Challenge in Minneapolis will no
longer service Wisconsin residents.
Denise suggested that they attend town board meetings to ask the towns to be
sponsors for road signs and to use their buildings for meetings. Dennis said there
are 17 towns in St. Croix County and they meet quarterly to discuss state and
local concerns.
Steve said the Ministerial Association will want someone to speck on Meth and
we need a group of speakers. Dennis and Steve said it should be members of the
community other than themselves, as they have done that often. Denise, Katie,
Linda and Doreen are willing.
Doreen said MADAM now has an email and website and are receiving calls from
the community. She gave an example a call they received.
E. RESEARCH COMMITTEE- Linda said that Buzz, a member of this committee,
asked his boss to put a public service announcement on the radio and he did.
Buzz works at a hardware store in River Falls. The owner Fred Benson has a
radio program Mon -Sat after the 9 am news entitled Time to Trade. The Radio
Station is WEVR and its 106.3 FM. Fred Benson is the :radio host and he makes
public service announcements. It will say: " If you are affiliated with a
community organization and if your organization would like to be a part of a
county -wide initiative to curb the use of Methamphetam:ine please call the St.
Croix County Meth Advisory Committee. Contact Steve; Kirt @ 715- 246 - 8256."
This is an example of how to invite service organizations to link with us.
Linda gave Katie as list of websites for the brochure as recommended by the
Research Subcommittee.
2. REPORT ON SIGNS — Star Prairie Township donated $600 to buy road signs for their
area.
3. METH POWERPOINT PRESENTATION- This presentation was viewed and
discussed. Some of the data needs to be revised if it is to be used to educate the public
such as the demographic data. Katie said the Department of Justice has updates on St.
Croix County. Dennis said the data only reflect cases reported to the crime lab so the
information can be used as evidence in court. There are many cases that don't go to
h
court, so there is more Meth use that reported. Dennis also said that we have now
surpassed Barron County in Meth cases.
Dave said that WI Public Radio would be airing information about Meth and Meth users
in 7 -8 minutes segments beginning first Friday in November. 'They will put together a %z
hour tape when they are done. Esther asked if we might be able to get a copy of the tape.
Dave said there are good videos about Meth. Marathon County produced a Meth video
Katie said her aunt is a librarian in New Richmond and she had her check resources on
Meth. It only had 2 books but could order more. The Research Subcommittee should
make a list of resources the library could order
Dave said that Sudafed PE would be on the shelves during flu season.
5. TREASURERS REPORT- Doreen made a deposit of $ 333.46 in the account.
Meeting Adjourned at 4:50 pm.
Respectfully Submitted
