HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 1983 (22)RESOLUTION REGARDING NUMBER OF JURORS COMPRISING A JURY. Resolution #._ WHEREAS, under present law, juries in criminal cases consist of 12 persons unless both parties agree on a lesser number, and in civil and traffic cases, the jury consists of 6 persons, unless a party requests or the court requires a greater number, not to exceed 12 persons; and WHEREAS, under the provisions of Assembly Bill 127 and Senate Bill 42, the present law would be retained for criminal cases which are felonies, but if the case is a misdemeanor the jury will consist of 6 persons; and WHEREAS, these bills further provide that juries in civil and traffic cases will consist of 6 persons; and WHEREAS, fewer people :will be inconvenienced in the selection process since presently 20 persons are needed to pick a jury of 12 persons and 14 persons are needed to pick a jury of 6 persons and under the provisions of these bills many 12 person juries will be eliminated and only 10 persons will be needed to pick a jury of 6 persons; and WHEREAS, it is estimated that the reduced size of juries will result in about a 50% cost reduction. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the St. Croix County Board of Supervisors, meeting in regular session, that this Board goes on record as supporting Assembly Bill 127 and Senate Bill 42; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be forwarded by the County Clerk to each member of the Wisconsin Legislature serving St. Croix,, -County, the Governor of the State of Wisconsin, Dated this 2�jG day of L//i 6- Negative and the Wisconsin Counties Association. 1983.
