RESOLUTION ABOLISHING UNDERSHERIFF POSITION AND CREATING FIRST DEPUTY POSITION FOR
ST. CROIX COUNTY. l

WHEREAS, on September 13, 1983 the St. Croix County Board of Supervisors passed
Resolution #.36(83)merging the St. Croix County Sheriff's Department with the St. Croix
County Highway Patrol, with the merger to take place as shown on Attachment A to said
resolution, and
WHEREAS, the Public Protection Committee has seriosuly considered said Attachment
A, the organizational chart for the merged law enforcement agencies, and recommends that
the existing position of Undersheriff be abolished and that in its place, the position
entitled First Deputy be created, and
WHEREAS, the proposed First Deputy would possess authority otherwise exercised by
the Undersheriff, including all functions, duties and responsibilities of the present
position of Undersheriff, and
WHEREAS, Attorney Generals Opinion 25-82 permits a county to abolish the position of
Undersheriff and transfer the statutory duties and powers of an Undersheriff to another
county created position, and
WHEREAS, it appears to be in the best interest of St. Croix County to abolish the
position of Undersheriff and to create a new position of First Deputy.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the St. Croix County Board of Supervisors, meeting
in regular session, that the statutory position of Undersheriff for St. Croix County is
hereby abolished, effective January 1 1984
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the new position entitled First Deputy is hereby created
effective January 1, 1984 , with the functions, duties, and responsibilities of the
First Deputy to be the same as those previous statutory functions, duties and responsibilities
of an Undersheriff.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the position of First Deputy shall be filled by using
present St. Croix County Personnel hiring procedures, which person shall thereafter be
deputized by the. Sheriff, and shall, when there is a vacancy in the office of the Sheriff,
execute the duties of such office "in all things" until the vacancy is filled.
