Present: Ronald Raymond, Jan Zoerb, Lois Burri, Bill Peavey, Gene Ruetz, Lee Milligan,
Jim Janke, and Mary Lestrud
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Ron Raymond
Date of next meeting was set for August 3, 2004
Ruetz moved that the Agenda be adopted as presented. Burn seconded the motion. Motion
carried.
Peavey moved the previous meeting's minutes be approved. Ruetz seconded the motion.
Motion carried.
Burri moved that the vouchers be approved. Ruetz seconded the motion. Motion carried.
Burn reported on attendance at WACEC Annual Conference.
Milligan discussed the structure UW- Extension, its relationship to the UW System, people of
Wisconsin, counties, and funding sources.
Ag Agent's Report
Milligan discussed his programming direction for recent years. His primary focus has been in
the areas of dairy, farm financial management and crops (more specifically forages). Within the
last year or so emphasis is slowly increasing in beef production, strategic planning and business
analysis, horse pasture management, and small farms management. He has also been actively
involved in the educational program of Farm City Day.
In 2004, Farm Technology Days will be held in Chippewa County. The Western Wisconsin Ag
Agents, including Milligan, are responsible for several educational activities. In 2005 the event
is in Clark County,
Family Living Agent's Report
Lestrud discussed the work she is doing with at -risk families. She is working with jail inmates
and shelter families, using children's literature as a vehicle to discuss child development and
parenting issues. Mary attended an in- service training on temperament issues in children which
she plans to use in her classes on Raising Your Spirited Child. Mary will help the St. Croix
Family Resource Center develop a Friends of the Center group this fall to help with fundraising
strategies and support for the center. She is currently working with the center director, Patty
Draxler, to develop a $450,000 grant proposal for a project called B -W, Be Well, which would
address the nutrition and exercise needs of children and families in the Baldwin/Woodville
school district and community. The long term goal is to reduce obesity in kids and parents to
reduce diabetes, heart disease, cancer and stroke. The model would be shared with a second
school district the following three years.
Lestrud worked with the 4 -H clothing committee to sponsor a one day workshop, teaching 17
children to construct bathrobes.
Lestrud is currently planning the 4 -H Food Fair in which members will have food and table
settings judged and learn about various aspects of nutrition and food preparation. Lestrud
discussed the current 2 -month focus for the nutrition program, eating plenty of fruits and
vegetables. This message will be delivered by nutrition educator, Martha Mabis, at learn- while-
you -wait times at WIC and at senior meal sites
Resource Development Agent's Report
Janke reported that small business counseling was held on June 17. Counseling sessions
continue on a monthly schedule with the next session on July 15.
The New Richmond Business Marketing Analysis is moving into the next phase. A sub-
committee has been created to recruit businesses on the priority list.
Janke continues to work with the staff of the Planning Department on the Heartland Towns
project.
The results of the Kinnickinnic drinking water testing were discussed. Of the 45 participants
from the town, only one sample was high in nitrate. There were two households with high lead
content and 4 with high copper levels. One had corrosive water. Janke showed the committee
the PowerPoint presentation that is used at the meeting where the results are distributed to the
participants and distributed a map of the nitrate levels in the 8 towns where the drinking water
program has been held in the past year.
Ruetz moved to adjourn. Burri seconded the motion. Motion carried.
