AGRICULTURE MINUTES
1 EXTENSION COMMITTEE
SEPTEMBER 11
Present: Jan Zoerb, Lois Burri, Bill Peavey, Gene Ruetz, Lee Milligan, James Janke, Kimberly
Reaman, and Mary Lestrud.
Absent: Ron Raymond
The meeting was called to order by Vice Chair Lois Burri at 9:05 a.m.

GGene Ruetz moved that the agenda be adopted as presented. Bill Peavey seconded the motion.
Motion carried.
Bill moved that the previous meeting's minutes be approved. Gene seconded the motion.
Motion carried.

ADMINISTRATIVE REPORT
Federal Budget Update —No report.
State Budget Update —No report.
County Budget —No report.
( WACEC Update —No report.
The Dean of Cooperative Extension visited the St. Croix County office on August 27th to learn
about unique programs in the county. Following presentations by the agents and Nutrition
Educator, a reception was held at the St. Croix Family Resource Center. Lois Burri represented
the Extension Committee at this event.
4 -H YOUTH AGENT'S REPORT
County Fair Report — Exhibit report is not yet finished.
Fair Evaluation Meeting — The meeting was well attended and most people were happy
with the organization of the fair. There is a power struggle within the Llama Committee which
Reaman will mediate this fall.
4 -H Leaders' Recognition Banquet — The banquet is scheduled for October 5 at the
American Legion in Baldwin. Burri and Ruetz will help present the Years of Service Awards
to the 4 -H Leaders. All committee members will be invited to attend.
RESOURCE AGENT'S REPORT
Janke has prepared an analysis of potential annual increases in retail and service sales by the
year 2015 in the New Richmond trade area based on projected increases in the number of new
housing units. He will be sharing this with the Chamber of Commerce and Economic
Development Corporation.
Comprehensive Planning Workshops are scheduled for September 29, October 13, October 27
and December 1.
Drinking water testing programs are scheduled on Sept 10 for Richmond & Erin Prairie;
October 1 for Hammond, Pleasant Valley, and Rush River; and October 22 for Baldwin, Eau
Galle, Cady, and Springfield.
Janke listed the Legislative "call trips" that are being organized by several counties or groups
of counties throughout the state and continues to collect information on them.
AGRICULTURE AGENT'S REPORT
Milligan reported that 38 producers attended an alfalfa /corn silage twilight meeting at Greg &
Bob Zwald's. Debbie Samac, USDA plant pathologist, discussed Brown Root Rot in alfalfa.
This is a newly discovered disease in the Midwest. There are three fields in St. Croix County
known to have this disease. Alfalfa cutting schedules and corn silage harvest was also
discussed.
Farm City Day was held in August at Gary & Mark Nadeau's. 2,300 people participated in the
event featuring educational tours on crops and dairy production. Milligan is responsible for
the educational tours.
Farm visits featured beef, dairy, and crop issues.
Upcoming efforts will focus on developing this fall and winter educational activities. They are
Grain & Dairy Marketing, Farm Management Programs, Dairy, and Forages.
Milligan will be working at Farm Technology Days September 21.
FAMILY LIVING AGENT'S REPORT
Mary presented a sample program to the committee on the new research regarding the
teenage brain. She trained parents of high school freshman in the Hudson school district as
well as public health staff and a Community Action group in Hudson. Parents and
professionals learned why their children act the way they do based on what is happening with
brain development.
Mary also worked extensively with the Family Resource Center during August, helping them
write a major grant to obtain Blue Cross Blue Shield funds for a large project in
Baldwin /Woodville called B -W, Be Well. The purpose of the project is to address nutrition,
obesity rates and lack of physical activity rates among adults and children in the two
communities. Extension will play a key role in the implementation of this project. Mary is also
helping the Family Resource Center work on a new strategy to develop long -term financial
donors to the center. She helped the center revise current personnel policies.
The 4 -H Food Fair was held during July, and youth had their fair exhibits judged as well as
participated in a Foods Revue activity, which involved table setting, food preparation, and
menu planning. Volunteers also taught the youth about hand washing, identifying kitchen
utensils, and how to prepare pancakes. The committee viewed pictures of the event.
Gene moved to adjourn. Bill seconded the motion. Motion carried.
