COUNCIL ON AGING MEETING
September 16, 2004
St. Croix County Government Center
CALL TO ORDER Council Chairman Ralph Bader, called the
meeting to order at 8:30 a.m.
ROLL CALL Members present were: Gerald Peterson, Richard
Peterson, Irene Burch, Marguerite Sumner, John Mortensen, Alice
Mullan, Carolyn Weisenburger, Ralph Bader, Richard (Buzz)
Marzolf and Jeanette O'Connell. Also present were: Sandy
Gehrmann, Tracy Davis, Renea Aeschliman, Gladys Ellefson,
Sylvia Heller, Janice Thompson, Shirley Marlette, Esther
Koosman, Julie Hillstead, Diana Fern, Phyllis Chapin and Donna
Lamson. Excused were Bette Norman & Dan Hansen.
ADOPTION OF AGENDA A motion was made by Gerald
Peterson and seconded by Rich Peterson to adopt the agenda as
printed; motion carried.
DATE OF NEXT MEETING The next meeting will be held on
Thursday, October 21, 2004.
ACTION OF PREVIOUS MINUTES A motion was made by
John Mortensen and seconded by Marguerite Sumner to approve
the minutes; motion carried.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
2005 Aging Budget: Sandy handed out the revisions for the
2005 Budget. Richard Marzolf made a motion to accept
the revised budget figures as listed on the handout. The
motion was seconded by Alice Mullan. Motion carried
unanimously. The budget review in front of Finance will
be held on Thursday, September 23 at 2:30.
NEW BUSINESS:

Aging & Disability Resource Center Application: Sandy
informed the Council that Aging and Disability Resource Center
grants will be available for 2005. The Resource Center would
be a one stop shop for information on Senior programs in St.
Croix County. The Center would house a Disability Benefit
Specialist, Long Term Support workers, and a director to
oversee the information and referral staff members. The
Resource Center's governing board could either be the Senior
Center Board Coalition or the Council on Aging. Currently
Sandy and Ron Lockwood, Long Term Support Supervisor, are
awaiting the actual RFP. Sandy asked the Council if she should
pursue the Resource Center grant. A motion was made by
Gerald Peterson to continue and was seconded by Irene Burch.
Motion carried.
Fall Caregiver Conference: A caregiver conference will be
held on Wednesday, November 10 It will be held at St. Paul's
Episcopal Church on County Road UU in Hudson from 9:00 —
12:00. There will be lunch afterwards that can either be enjoyed
at the church or taken home. Respite will be provided for care
receivers that are in need of it. Connie Goldman and a private
company called Life Quilt will be presenters for the day.
STAFF REPORTS
Sandy's Report:
Sandy handed out a flyer on an informative Town Hall
meeting on health related issues including tobacco control.
Sandy is also pursuing a grant for $25,000 to Enhance Elder
Choice & Access to Community -Based Care. A motion was made
by Irene Burch and seconded by Marguerite Sumner to apply for
the grant which is due October 1 St. Motion carried.
Tracy's Report: The 4 th Annual Health Expo will be held in
Menomonie on September 17 between 9:00 — 12 noon.

Connie Goldman will be at the Sacred Heart Hospital on
Thursday, September 30
Diane Rhein's Report: Diane handed out 2004 Resource Guide
of Services for Older Adults. The Senior Statesman Alumni will
be having a reunion at an apple orchard in Pierce County. They
will be focusing on `The Power of One: Reaping the Fruits of
Effective Advocacy.'
SITE /CENTER REPORTS
BALDWIN Bingo is played twice a week and foot care will be
taking place sometime in the month. A Baked Potato Supper
Fundraiser will be held on October 8 The flu shots will be
offered on October 20 Fuel Assistance will be held sometime in
the month.
DEER PARK Flu Clinic will be held in October. A nice
amount of garden produce has been coming in from the Share the
Bounty program. Fire & preparedness session went well. An
evening meal is being planned for Thursday, November 11 with
entertainment.
GLENWOOD CITY: Flu Clinic will be held in October as well
as Fuel Assistance. Everything is going great with bingo twice a
week. Working on putting together an exercise program. Police
Department came and informed the participants in fire safety and
presented lots of information. Planning the Volunteer dinner and
Thanksgiving dinners the same day.
HAMMOND: All activities going well. Volunteer appreciation
picnic was on September 15 with the lunch catered in by Eggens
in Baldwin. September 14 fire drill was changed to September
28 Eleven participants went to Austin, MN for the Hormel
museum tour. Plums have been coming in from the Share the
Bounty program.
ROBERTS Julie Hillstead just started as the new site manager
for Roberts and has been enjoying the different personalities.

Cards are played every Monday — currently there is only a small
group. A trip is being planned to Paradise Valley Farm in Dunn
County.
HUDSON Visited 2 former participants in the nursing home in
River Falls. Panhandlers entertained at the birthday parry last
Friday. Bingo, foot care and blood pressure are going well.
Massage is being held twice a week. Started a walking program
around the Wintergreen complex.
NEW RICHMOND Polka bash/Birthday Party was held in
August in the Star Prairie Park. Blood Pressure checks will be
held on the last Wednesday of every month. The Happy Grannies
will be performing. A boat trip is being planned for October 8 th to
Taylors Falls.
RIVER FALLS:
SOMERSET Bingo and exercise have been going well.
WOODVILLE Salad Bar luncheon will be held tomorrow from
11:00 — 1:00. Margaret Mitchell will be entertaining sometime in
October. Need more card players. The fire drill was held on
September 9th
VAN TRIPS:
New Richmond to Taylors Falls — October 8th
Roberts to Menomonie — October
A motion to approve the van trips was made by John Mortensen
and seconded by Rich Peterson; motion carried.
