Also present were: Sandy Gehrmann, Tracy Davis, Renea Aeschliman, Gladys Ellefson, Sylvia Heller, Janice Thompson, Shirley Marlette, Dan Hansen, Irma Mohn, Marge Wolske, and Donna Lamson. ADOPTION OF AGENDA A motion was made by Marguerite Sumner and seconded by Jeanette O'Connell to adopt the agenda as printed; motion carried. DATE OF NEXT MEETING The next meeting will be held on Thursday, April 15, 2004. ACTION OF PREVIOUS MINUTES A motion was made by Carolyn Weisenburger and seconded by Loretta Cassellius to approve the minutes; motion carried. UNFINISHED BUSINESS Staff /Volunteer Training: On February 6 th and 13 the Department on Aging offered an Occupational First Aid Training for all staff and volunteers. The training was lead by Chuck Mehls and attended by 57 staff members and volunteers. Council on Aging Page 1 09/01/04 Tracy has received positive feedback from those that attended. NEW BUSINESS: Goal Setting Update: Sandy handed out a copy of the St. Croix County Goal - setting Session that was held on April 23, 2002. Sandy read over the key points to the council and asked what concerns the council has for St. Croix County. Zoning changes and the need for additional affordable senior housing were suggestions. Upcoming Events: Caregiver Town Hall meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 23 rd at the St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Hudson. Registration starts at 8:30 and ends with a boxed lunch at12 noon. Volunteer Banquet will be held on April 22n at The Valley House in North Hudson. Senior Celebration and Silent Auction will be held on May 26 at the Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson. Cost for the whole day will be $15.00. STAFF REPORTS Sandy's Report: Sandy handed out nutrition site statistics for 2003. She also handed out the Federal Emergency Food and Shelter (FEMA) allocations for 2004 - 2005. The Department on Aging will be receiving $10,000 this cycle. The money will be used to purchase emergency meal and incontinent supplies for seniors in need. Sandy also gave council members information sheets on changes to the Medicare structure. Sandy shared with the council that FamiliesUSA will be having a Medicare Road Show in St. Paul the first week in May. Sandy said that she would like use the site vans or busses to take seniors to the road show. A motion was made by Richard Marzolf and seconded by Irene Burch that Sandy be able to utilize the site vans or busses if needed as well as purchase the video that goes along with the Road Show. Motion passed and carried. Chairman Richard Peterson wished Sandy `Good Luck'. Sandy let the members know that when they are the center board meetings that they need to be very cautious not to get into the middle of controversy. When working with facilities in the community you need to work with all the facilities. Document when you contact the facilities and whether they wish to work with your site or not. Tracy's Report: Tracy handed out the Department on Aging's Capital Improvement Plan and reviewed it for the council. Three vans were purchased in 2003. In 2004 the goal is to purchase a lower floored mini van for approximately $36,000. Tracy thanked all of the center board representatives that participated in the United Way presentation night on March 3rd Card tournaments will be starting up on March 31S with Baldwin hosting the very first one. SITEXENTER REPORTS BALDWIN AARP tax assistance went well with 26 people one day. Foot care and blood pressure continue. 18 people went to the West Wind Supper Club & Shopko in River Falls. Getting ready for card tournaments and will be hosting the first one on March 31S SHARE program is at the site and they are taking food orders. So far they have had 15 orders for food. Council on Aging Page 3 09/01/04 DEER PARK Tax assistance went well last month with 6 people. Blood pressure is taking place almost every day. Center Board has purchased local papers for the participants to read. Have had a small group of men that come and chat about many different issues. Was very proud of the group that presented at United Way. GLENWOOD CITY: Tax Assistance went really well — he was really busy. Blood Pressure and bingo are going well. Planning for St. Patrick's Day. Store room is completely painted and containers have been purchased for the bathrooms. HAMMOND: All activities are going good - blood pressure, bingo, birthday parties and cards. Planning a St. Patrick's Day party for March 16 Several participants are looking forward to the card tournament this year. ROBERTS The site is doing really well in its first month — averaging 20 people. 4 people come in and play cards every morning. Bingo has just started. Getting ready for the card tournament which will be at the Roberts' dining site on April 21S HUDSON Bingo, cards, and massage are going good. April 8th is the big monthly birthday party with a clown. Lots of people have taken advantage of the tax assistance at Pine Ridge — busy directing them to the location. Master gardeners have been calling regarding drop off times. The March birthday party was on the 12 and at St. Patrick's Day party is planned for the 17 with corn beef and cabbage. NEW RICHMOND In February the site had a really swell Valentine's Day party. A retired Spanish teacher, Sandy Bishop, played her guitar. The participants were able to polka, waltz, and sing along with her. Lots of door prizes were donated. Planning a shopping trip to the dollar store in Amery on April 2nd RIVER FALLS: Euchre is played every Wednesday with Bridge and 500 on Thursdays. The General Meeting is planned for Council on Aging Page 4 09/01/04 March with Tracy and Sandy as guests. The 55 Alive driving course is scheduled for April 12' 13 from 10:00 — 2:30 with the cost at $10.00. AARP tax assistance was available for participants throughout February and also March. The annual pancake breakfast will be held on April 18 SOMERSET Thank you to Alice Mullan & Florence Patrick for presenting at United Way. Had a celebration for one of the participants that turned 100. A raffle will be held on Wednesday for a handmade wagon for a fundraiser for the center. Knights of Columbus has added the senior center to their list of charitable donations. March 25 trip for lunch out at Connelly's in Burkhardt. WOODVILLE A good crowd turned out for tax assistance. Would like to use the van to go to Hudson shopping once a month after lunch —1:30 on Wednesday. Cards and bingo are going well. VAN TRIPS: New Richmond to Amery on April 2nd A motion to approve the van trips was made by Ralph Bader and seconded by Carolyn Weisenburger; motion carried.
