Ponding of effluent on the ground surface may indicate a failing condition that requires immediate attention by a licensed septic professional. Tanks must be pumped when sludge accumulation is within 12 inches of the bottom of the outlet baffle, or whenever the scum Layer is within 3 inches of the bottom of the outlet baffle. In no case shall total sludge and scum volume occupy greater than 25% of the tanks liquid capacity. The effluent filter shall be cleaned as necessary to ensure proper operation. The filter should not be removed unless provisions are made to retain solids in the tank that may slough off the filter during removal.
