COUNCIL ON AGING MEETING
September 16, 2003
St. Croix County Government Center
CALL TO ORDER Chairman Rich Peterson, called the meeting
to order at 8:30 a.m.
ROLL CALL Members present were: Ralph Bader, Richard
(Buzz) Marzolf, Gerald Peterson, Loretta Cassellius, Rich
Peterson, Irene Burch, Marguerite Sumner, Bette Norman, Dr.
Glenn Hoberg, Carolyn Weisenburger, Jeanette O'Connell and
Alice Mullan. Also present were: Sandy Gehrmann, Tracy Davis,
Renea Aeschliman, Gladys Ellefson, Diana Fern, Sylvia Heller,
Cindy Ahrens, Shirley Marlette, Dan Hansen, Lorraine Jacobs,
and Donna Lamson. Janice Thompson was excused.
ADOPTION OF AGENDA A motion was made by Alice
Mullan and seconded by Jeannette O'Connell to adopt the agenda
as printed; motion carried.
DATE OF NEXT MEETING The next meeting will be held on
Thursday, October 16, 2003.
ACTION OF PREVIOUS MINUTES A motion was made by
Ralph Bader and seconded by Carolyn Weisenburger to approve
the minutes as printed; motion carried.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Budget Updates: Sandy handed out a summary of the
Department on Aging's request from the County. The increase
is for salaries, fringe benefits and liability insurance. Sandy also
gave the Council members a handout describing formulas in

regards to state and federal monies. Sandy is scheduled to meet
with the finance committee on Thursday, September 25
Gerald Peterson moved that the budget as amended be
approved. Motion was seconded by Richard Marzolf and
unanimously carried.
NEW BUSINESS:
Deb Murtha: Deb spoke to the Council regarding the program
she is starting called Home Care Services. The program will be
non - medical in -home care that will assist with a variety of needs
at a cost to the client. Brochures and her cards were given the
members of the Council and site managers. The service will be
available County wide.
AARP Conference Report Sandy attended the conference this
year which was held in Chicago, IL on September 4 th until
September 7 The theme for this year was `Life at 50 +, a
Celebration of You.' There were lots of vendors and over
14,000 individuals pre- registered. Next year's convention will
be held in Las Vegas, NV. Rich had asked about a St. Croix
County AARP chapter and Sandy mentioned that we will start
up a group entitled 50 +Forum instead of an AARP chapter.
STAFF REPORTS
Sandy's Report: Sandy spoke to the Council regarding Lifeline
screening. Sandy suggested that it be up to the Center Boards of
the sites to determine whether they be allowed to present at the
site, but Gerald Peterson moved to deny any visiting to the sites by
Lifeline. It was then seconded by Irene Burch.
The Roberts site received donated items from the Hudson
Hospital. A three well steam table, refrigerator, and some other

kitchen items were purchased at the auction. The Department on
Aging purchased a dishwasher for the site with the Vitamin grant
money. The site is almost finished and will run with volunteers.
The Fall Senior Leadership Conference is projected to have
85 — 90 people in attendance. The speakers should make the day
interesting and the location should work out great.
Tracy's Report: Tracy handed out surveys from St. Croix
County Public Health, one in regarding dining sites, and at center
board she had given out surveys for them to give to independent
living units regarding to senior centers. Surveys from Public
Health should be turned in by October 6 th to their office in New
Richmond. Please return other surveys to the office as soon as
possible.
SITE/CENTER REPORTS
BALDWIN The ten line dancers from Amery entertained for a
donation. The members are mainly snowbirds so they are done
entertaining for the year. Went to watch a play in Pepin and
enjoyed shopping and ice cream afterwards. A baked potato
supper is planned for October 16 for a fundraiser for the site.
The site is planning a joint leaf tour with the New Richmond
Center October 10
DEER PARK They are enjoying their new van and the massage
that just started. With the new van they are planning a trip to
Albertville.
GLENWOOD CITY: Planning a soup and sandwich luncheon
on October.
HAMMOND/ROBERTS The site finally received its new
steam table and they are really excited to have it. Fall activities
are going well. The participants would like to plan a van trip
sometime in October for a leaf tour.

HUDSON They are busy packing lunches and playing bingo.
Popcorn is served on Thursdays. The Lokkers of Baldwin
entertained for the September birthday party. Foot care is ever
other month, blood pressure is starting up again and massage will
be twice a month on Wednesdays. The sanitarian visited the site
last month.
NEW RICHMOND Planning a Lefsa clinic as a fundraiser for
the center. 12 individuals are attending the Fall Conference.
Participants are invited to attended a couple of upcoming events —
October 1S musical play `Under the Apple Tree' and a Paddle
Boat cruise and leaf tour on October 10 in Stillwater, in
conjunction with the Baldwin Senior Center.
RIVER FALLS: The new card room is up and running and
already being used for card games. AARP Driver Safety Program
will be held on October 13 & 14 from 10:00 to 2:30 with a cost
of $10.00. The flu clinic for Pierce County is planned for October
23 on 12:00 to 12:30. 15 people attended the foot clinic in
September.
SOMERSET The monthly lunch outing was to Adventures in
Osceola on September 26 The sanitarian visited the site last
month. There was a party held for Margaret in honor of all the
work that she has done in the kitchen over the years. Margaret
will no longer be volunteering in the kitchen at the site.
WOODVILLE Cards and bingo are going well. The bakeless
bake sale will be finishing up on September 30 They would like
to plan a leaf trip sometime in October.

A motion to approve the van trips was made by Ralph Bader and
seconded by Alice Mullan; motion carried.
