Surrounding counties have similar policies. A copy of the policy is attached to the minutes for future reference. NEW BUSINESS: State of Aging and Health in America: Sandy summarized a survey that was done by the Gerentological Society of America. Population of those over 65 is projected to double by 2030. Americans are living longer, but not necessarily in better health - diabetes and high blood pressure are becoming more prevalent. All states missed targets for physical, nutrition, and weight. Almost 20% of older Americans experience mental disorders. Many primary care physicians are not trained to screen for mental illness and may attribute psychiatric symptoms to normal aging or physical illness. Over 90% of depressed seniors receive improper treatment despite the availability. The social aspect of the dining sites is very important. Proper geriatric care could cut cost by at least 10 % a year. Deerfield Residents: JoAnne Wrich and Jackie Waalen addressed the Council regarding to the continued need to use the New Richmond Site Van by the Deerfield. A handout was given to the Council members outlining the effects of not having the use of the van and what is being done to remedy the Council on Aging Page 2 03/25/03 need. Ms. Wrich and Ms. Waalen asked the Council for a continuation of use of the van until April 1S when the van from Signet Health Care would be available. The Transportation Committee broke for a caucus. When Council resumed the Transportation Committee had decided that the Deerfield could utilize the New Richmond Van, Monday - Thursday during regularly scheduled hours on designated shopping days and subject to nutrition site and driver availability. If extensive assistance is needed for shopping, a volunteer from the Deerfield should accompany the resident(s) . A motion was made by Gerald Peterson and then seconded by Carolyn Weisenburger to pass the policy. A letter will be sent to the Deerfield and the Senior Centers for future reference. Food & Safety for Seniors: Viewed a video on food safety for seniors within their homes and when they eat out. STAFF REPOR Sandy's Report: Handout in regards to an advocacy alert to contact members of congress and urge them to support increases in OAA funding.
