Traffic Safety - Regular Meeting - Jan 21, 2015 10:00 AM Minutes were accepted as presented RESULT: ACCEPTED PUBLIC COMMENT* None BUSINESS ITEMS 1. I-94 Improvements, Hudson, Year 2017 Greg Helgeson informed the committee of numerous improvement projects that will be taking place in 2017 on I-94 from the Hudson Bridge to milepost 5 eastbound. The WI DOT will be developing a traffic control plan in more detail before these improvements begin. These projects are expected to take place beginning in the Spring and ending in the Fall of 2017. RESULT: DISCUSSED 2. State Patrol Laws of the Month Dennis Johnson gave an overview of the Laws of the Month that were part of the Agenda Packet: April ~ Are drivers on highways required to make room for merging vehicles? May ~ Traffic Citations are double in work Zones June ~Safety devices required when towing trailers RESULT: DISCUSSED 3. Upcoming Workshops: Teaching Safe Bicycling & Designing for Pedestrian Safety Dennis Johnson gave a brief synopsis on the handouts that were attached to the agenda packet: Teaching Safe Bicycling 2015 & Designing For Pedestrian Safety RESULT: DISCUSSED 4. Legislative Report Dennis Johnson reported the following legislative news: AB-27/SB-26: Speed on Freeways and Expressways (70 mph) - Passed in one House and is awaiting action in the 2nd House AB-28/SB66: Nonfunctioning Traffic Signals - Passed in Committee in 1st House AB-72/SB-10: Powdered Alcohol (prohibits sale) has been introduced. RESULT: DISCUSSED 5. 2015 Grants Dennis Johnson informed the committee that the next Mobilization is Click It or Ticket: May 18 - May 31, 2015 He also advised that Ken Berg and George Silverwood are no longer with the Bureau of Transportation Safety (BOTS). RESULT: DISCUSSED 6. State Fatality Report Dennis briefed the committee on the State Fatality Report: As of April 15, 2015, there have been 120 fatalities; at this same time last year, there were 90 fatalities. The 5-Year Average is 108 as of Sunday, April 12, 2015. He advised that last year was an historical low for Wisconsin. RESULT: DISCUSSED 7. State Patrol Traffic Report Sergeant Erickson advised that the troopers that we discussed at our last meeting are all off of field training; therefore, our troop strength is back up to 9 troopers. RESULT: DISCUSSED 8. St. Croix County Crash Report/Review Chair Klatt informed the committee that St. Croix County has had 4 fatalities since our last meeting; specifics on each fatality were discussed. RESULT: DISCUSSED 9. Traffic Concerns CTH A approximately 1 mile south of Richmond Way Chair Klatt addressed the concerns on CTH A and the recent fatality. Tim Ramberg advised that this area has been looked at closely and there are some low cost, high impact possibilities that are being reviewed, such as possibly some signage changes. He also showed some photos on his computer of the area that was being discussed. RESULT: DISCUSSED ANNOUNCEMENTS & CORRESPONDENCE Dennis Johnson presented the committee with a handout - Safety Tips from KidsAndCars.org; and briefly described the contents.
