Adnn, Code, However, in this particular case I believe the conditions reported support inclusion of the AE with the underlying E horizon when calculating the +4 zone. The designation AE means that the horizon is dominated by the properties of one master horizon but has subordinate propertiies of another horizon. Typically, the first letter designated means the properties of that horizon are dominate and those of the second horizon are not as well expressed. The A+4 standard was developed because as organic matter (humus) coats the soil particle surfaces making them dark adored, it often masks other features, such as iron concentrations and depletions (redoximorphic features), that are indicators of seasonal or periodic soil wetness. Only under very careful scrutiny do we conslder redox features within four inches of the bottom of an A horizon not to be indicators of saturation into the overlying A horizon. Horizons with Munsell colors with value and chroma less than 3.5 should generally be considered dark enough to mask redox features. However, transitional horizons that are light colored enough to detect redox features can be recognized as part of the +4 zone. 01/2112005 13: 05 ; 15-726-2549 S&B CFIIPPE4JA FALLS PAGE 0 Page 2 of 2 Christensen Property Town of Eau Galle, St. Croix County In this particular case, other documentation regarding the soils and site may be considered when deciding to include a transitional horizon as part of the +4 zone Those considerations include the following: 1. The other soil borings have 6-8 inches of separation between the bottom of the A horizon and faint redox features. 2. The transitional horizon is reported as 10YR 3/4 (dark yellowish brown) and is likely not dark enough to mask redox features when closely evaluated. 3. There is three inches of E horizon (10YR 4/3) material below the transitional horizon and above faint redox features that begin nine inches The only disturbing feature of soil boring 3 is that the lowermost horizon is a massive clay loam. This does not correlate well with the other soil borings that have a sandy loam substratum. This condKion should dictate a conservative mound design using a low linear loading rate of less than or equal to 4.5 gpd/ft. In conclusion, it is my opinion that the transitional soil horizon reported in soil boring 3 may be included with the unsaturated material below for a total of six inches below the A horizon. The reported results are still subject to verification by county or department staff, and I believe that county policy is to verify conditions are all sites with A+8 inches or less. Under that policy, this site would need a county onsite soils verification. If there are any questions regarding this memo, please feel free to contact me. cc: St. Croix County Zoning
