Younger drivers will be recruited and trained and will be reimbursed for mileage. The funds granted by the Department on Aging will be used specifically for driver reimbursement. Sandy announced that Tracy Davis has filled the Community Service Specialist position. In -house advertisement for the Administrative Assistant position has begun. Sandy reported that the January 1St, 2003 cost of living adjustment to Social Security is likely to be 1.3 %, the lowest on record. The COLA is calculated upon the consumer price index for urban wage earners and clerical workers, not on the spending habits of seniors. Yearly adjustments may be more accurate if calculated upon a "Seniors Only" consumer price index. STAFF REPORTS Sue's Report: Information and updates on the SeniorCare and CWAG's Canadian Drug Store Connection drug programs were detailed. Sandy's Report: The U. S. drug companies that market the 15 most often prescribed drugs to seniors spent nearly 2.5 times as much money on marketing, advertisement and administration as was spent on research and development in 2001. Total profits by these drug companies were 60 times greater than the total dollar amount spent on research and development. In light of these huge profits, enormous executive salaries, and the marketing budget, claims that any regulation would infringe on research and development are irresponsible and wrong.
