General Caregiver
Support
Group: Faye
Kangas,
Coordinator of Faith In
Action is
in the process of
creating a
general caregiver
support
group to be
held at various locations
across St. Croix
County.
A trained
staff person will provide
supervision and activities
to the care
receiver while the care-
giver attends the
group.
Site managers were encouraged to
compile a list of
individuals
in their
communities who would
benefit from this service.
On June 22nd a Memory Loss Workshop with Marge Hageman
of the Alzheimer's Association will be held at the Government
Center from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. All site staff was
encouraged to attend.
Volunteer Recognition Dinner: 162 participated in the
recognition of those who volunteered hours in 2000.
Senior Celebration: Approximately 180 people participated in
the event. Faith in Action's Silent Auction cleared over
$1600.00. Congratulations were given to Outstanding Senior
Citizen finalist, Rich Peterson, and Marguerite Sumner and
Ernie Seversen, 2001's Outstanding Senior Citizens of St.
Croix County.
The event was very successful. Changes for future years will
include ending the Silent Auction after the noon meal and
decreasing the afternoon entertainment to one act rather than
two.
Golf Tournament: 60 golfers participated in the tournament
held at Kilkarney Hills Golf Course at River Falls on June 18 t ''.
Despite the recent rains, the course was in very good shape.
Dr. Hoberg and Rich Peterson were present at the dinner
ceremony. To date, $7891.75 has been taken in. With
expenses, there was a net gain of $3620.00. Programs from
the tourney with the names of sponsors, and golfers were
passed for review. Those present were encouraged to thank
individuals and businesses in their respective communities who
donated to or participated in this years tournament.
Next year, the tournament will be held only if there are six or
seven individuals from across the county who would be willing
to serve on the committee. Recognition of the contributions of
this year's committee members was given. Continuation of the
golf tournament will be held up for discussion at future Council
Meetings.
Somethin's Cookin' at the Fair: The St. Croix County Fair
will take place on July 19 20, 21 St and 22n . Barb distributed
the site fair schedule, tagboard for posters, and surveys for
kitchen staff. Pictures of kitchen staff will be featured on the
posters and information gathered from returned surveys will
complement each site's display. Posters must be completed and
at the office before Thursday July 19 th .
Suggestions for activities were solicited. Glenwood City has
created a food bingo game complete with a prize for a drawing
to be held at the Fair's end. Glenwood City kitchen staff will
also submit favorite recipes. Other sites are encouraged to
follow suit by holding activities to take place during the time
they are to be at the fair. Marge Wolske will do a cake
decorating demonstration during Hammond's scheduled time.
A reminder that there is no oven available at the fair for
cooking demonstrations.
NEW BUSINESS
National Family Caregiver Support Program: The
Department on Aging will soon receive the first years allocation
of $14,018.00 as legislated in the reauthorization of the Older
Americans Act. Barb and Sandy attended the Master Trainers
Class in Mosinee throughout the week of May 21S Information
regarding the Family Caregiver Program released from The
Administration on Aging was distributed. Plans for the
utilization of the funds to be received include a support group, as
mentioned previously, as well as education and training for
caregivers.
The discussion that followed focused on the need for
transportation services in our area for individuals receiving
radiation or chemotherapy treatments. A regional meeting of the
Aging Units and the American Cancer Society was recently held
in Baron County. Money collected at Relays for Life does not
come back to the counties as service dollars. Concerns about
transportation needs and gaps in service were recognized, but any
organizational policy change would have to take place at the
national level.
Cancer transportation will be put on next month's agenda to be
discussed further in light of the results of the regional meeting.
Benefit Specialist Issues: Due to the Benefit Specialist State
Conference, Sue will present material at a future Council
meeting.
Staff Reports
Sandy's Report: For the third year in a row a Community Links
Grant through Long Term Support has been written and
approved. $11,000 plus dollars will be used in our Information
and Assistance, Outreach, Gatekeeper and Faith in Action
programs.
Sixty -eight St. Croix County low- income seniors have applied for
and received Farmer's Market Grants offered through West Cap.
They will receive a $200.00 Farmer's Market voucher. Barb
discussed income guidelines and informed council members that
the Department has applications. River Falls, New Richmond,
and Hudson Farmer's Market have yet to return their contracts,
but are expected to do so soon. The application packet has
locations of certified Farmer's Markets across St. Croix County.
Site drivers will be delivering the vouchers to homebound people
who have qualified for the program. Vouchers can be used at
certified markets in counties that West Cap serves.
The Master Gardener Program has designated Senior Dining
Sites in the county as drop off spots. Nutrition Program kitchens
can supplement meals with produce picked within 24 hours of
food preparation.
Once again the Department has the opportunity to sell raffle
tickets for Hammond Heartland Days celebrated on August 9
10th, 11 , and 12''. A percentage of last years sales totaling
approximately $500.00 were returned to Department for
programs. Sites and individuals participating are to return monies
and remaining tickets before the next Council meeting. A motion
was made by Marge Wolske and seconded by Mary Lou Smith to
participate in raffle sales. A motion was made Irene Burch and
seconded by John Mortensen to earmark proceeds received for
cancer transportation; motion carried.
Information from the National Policy and Resource Center on
Nutrition and Aging about increasing participation in congregate
sites was discussed. Home delivered meal programs are soaring
while congregate participation is in a slow decline. Congregate
meals enhance daily nutrient intake, nutritional status, social
interactions, and functionality of older adults. A possibility for
the future that has improved attendance in large cities, options is
the Restaurant Dining Out Program. It is currently operating in
several areas across the country and is being monitored closely.
Barb and Sandy participated in the four -day intensive" Train the
Trainers" class in Mosinee. Materials from the class were
distributed for examination.
Barb's Report: Once again site inventories need to be
completed. Each Center Board is responsible for marking items
on each individual list that are known to belong to the Senior
Center or the County.
The Department of Transportation is requiring the
implementation of a preventative maintenance schedule and
training schedule for those drivers who use a lift vehicle.
Meetings on these programs will be scheduled in the near future.
Recent community outreach programs implemented by sites
involving letters and meal tickets or coupons were discussed.
The Operations Committee will meet in the very near future to
develop general guidelines. Sites are to submit samples of
existing outreach correspondence for review with
recommendations from the committee to follow.
