COUNCIL ON AGING MEETING January 18, 2001 St. Croix County Government Center CALL TO ORDER Chairman, Rich Peterson, called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. ROLL CALL Members present were: Richard Peterson, John Mortensen, Margaret Wolske, Glenn Hoberg, Marguerite Sumner, Doris Teigen, Carolyn Weisenburger, Ralph Bader, Florence Patrick and Mary Lou Smith. Rhoda Wood was excused. Also present were: Barb Blaisdell, Sandy Gehrmann, Tracy Davis, Jolayne Mehr, Janice Thompson, Cindy Ahrens, Betty Jordahl, Gladys Ellefson, Donna Lamson, and Pat Otto. Introductions were made. ADOPTION OF AGENDA A motion was made by Margaret Wolske, and seconded by John Mortensen to adopt the agenda as printed; motion carried. DATE OF NEXT MEETING A motion was made by Ralph Bader, and seconded by Mary Lou Smith to hold the next meeting on March 15, 2001; motion carried. ACTION OF PREVIOUS S : A motion was made by Glenn Hoberg and seconded by Marguerite Sumner to approve the minutes as printed; motion carried. SHED BUSINESS l' Reading of Operating Rules: Changes to Amendment 4B and 7A were read an addressed. Second reading will be on the agenda for the March 15' Council meeting. NEW BUSINESS Profile of Older Americans 2000: Information related to older Americans was distributed and discussed. The number of 60+ individuals has increased significantly. The Profile also included trends; income and health related information. _Older Americans Act Comparisons Information distributed showed side by side comparisons of the former and the new Older Americans Act that was reauthorized in October 2000. Under the new Act, reauthorization will occur every five years. Significant changes and similarities were highlighted. Increases in allowances for transfer of funds between programs, and inkind match requirements for each program were also discussed. Continuation of funding for programs and services is dependent upon reporting volunteer activities. Barb addressed the procedure for reimbursement of the transportation program for costs related to meal delivery from funds provided through the OAA. Staff Reports Sandy's Report: Progress on re- establishing a local AARP chapter was discussed. The new St. Croix County AARP Chapter could hold quarterly meetings at various sites across the county. Sandy and Ron Lockwood would spearhead the mission and utilize $35.00 from the Department On Aging Advocacy Funds as a start up fee. Discussion followed. A motion was made by Marge Wolske and seconded by Florence Patrick to proceed with the organization of a local AARP Chapter; motion carried. Sandy encouraged the nutrition program managers to pick up information about the New Fogey Follies, share the information and contact the Department on Aging so a bus can be arranged if W. needed. State of Wisconsin has received a USDA Senior Farmers Market Grant. St. Croix County is one of a few counties selected to pilot the program. A request by an Eau Claire area insurance agent to present long term care insurance to seniors at local sites was discussed. A motion was made by Marge Wolske and seconded by John Mortensen to allow the agent to arrange her own presentations during times when senior centers or nutrition sites aren't in operation; motion carried. Sandy and Faye Kangas have been asked to be part of a panel at Spring Conference in Madison sponsored by the state Department of Health and Family Services. St. Croix County is only one of three Faith in Action programs nationwide operated out of a public agency January is Eye Care Month. An Alladin scanner(magnifier) donated by a local Hudson woman was on display. The scanner is valued at $1900.00. A note from the donor was read. The scanner will be available at various sites upon arrangement. A second anonymous gift of $7000.00 was received through the Senior Center Coalition. The first anonymous gift was received in 1999. A Thank You to the anonymous donor will be placed in the next Scan. The first new Faith in Action Board Meeting was held on January 17 ' Included are clergy, health and human service professionals, former county board members and others. Rich Peterson announced that the Farm and Agriculture Consumer Protection Agency in Madison is holding a number of workshops across the state entitled "Understanding and Responding to Farmer's in Distress." One such workshop will be held on January 31' at the Best Western in Eau Claire. SITE /CENTER REPORTS BALDWIN Plans to incorporate standing monthly shopping trips to Hudson into van activity schedule. Card tournament scheduled for March 28'. DEER PARK Card tournament is scheduled for March 21st. GLENWOOD CITY: Card tournament scheduled for April 25` h . HAMMOND/ROBERTS A shopping trip to Hudson is being planned. HUDSON A January van trip to Como Park Conservatory is planned. Card tournament is tentatively scheduled May 2 nd. . NEW RICHMOND The Card Tournament is scheduled for April 18". SOMERSET Monthly van trips to Hudson are planned. Card tournament is scheduled for April 4th. Three floor fans from the Somerset Nutrition Site were donated. WOODVILLE Card tournament is scheduled for April 11'. A motion was made by Margaret Wolske, seconded by Marguerite Sumner to authorize aforementioned van trips; motion carried. A motion was made by Marge Wolske and seconded by Florence Patrick to adjourn the meeting; motion carried. Ideas for future agendas were solicited. A motion was made by Margaret Wolske, seconded by John Mortensen to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried.
