3. Scope of Work Plan for Employment Trends and Issues for Individuals with Disabilities Subcommittee
Anderson opened the floor for recommendations from the committee. It was mentioned to potentially
look at the barriers as to why there is difficulty in employing individuals with disability by doing
research. An end goal that was mentioned was to see the unemployment numbers go down. Topics
discussed were: look at current facility based employers, business that have hired individuals with
disabilities, community based employment, and possible barriers faced by individuals. Another avenue
discussed was to look at those that are in the transitioning age group of 14 to 21 years of age and how
schools are working with the children, families and outside agencies. The four groups of folks to look
at are those in facility based employments, those in community based employment, those in the
workforce and those who are not working for a variety of reasons post-graduation. There was dialogue
of whether it would be best to bring in businesses currently employing individuals with disabilities and
see what they are doing, how they did it, provide pros and cons and how would they may be able to
help the group to expand to others employers. Vice Chair Schreiber suggested that each member come
back with two barriers and determine which ones the group would be able to achieve as a goal. Chair
Anderson again mentioned bringing in employers to provide insight and speak on the pros and cons.
Chair Anderson suggested having a speaker from Center for Independent Living at the next meeting.
