OR DISTRIBUTION OF MERCURY THERMOMETERS
RESOLUTION NO. $ C 3)
St. Croix County
WHEREAS, mercury has several serious health effects, particularly for young
children and pregnant women, including tremors, impaired vision or hearing, insomnia,
weakness, headache, impaired memory, irritability, nervousness and learning disabilities; and
WHEREAS, mercury also causes substantial environmental impacts, such that one
gram of mercury from a typical thermometer is enough to cause a fish consumption advisory
on a 20 -acre lake; and
WHEREAS, current law already prohibits the sale of toys and certain batteries
containing mercury; and
WHEREAS, the Wisconsin Legislature has developed companion bills, 2003
Assembly Bill 23 and 2003 Senate Bill 10, to prohibit the sale and distribution of mercury
thermometers; and
WHEREAS, the proposed legislation contains exemptions for thermometers used for
food research, food processing and calibration of other thermometers.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the St. Croix County Board of
Supervisors endorses legislation to prohibit the sale and distribution of mercury
thermometers, including 2003 Assembly Bill 23 and 2003 Senate Bill 10.
