HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolutions 2001 (12) RESOLUTION DECLARING AGRICULTURE TO BE IN A STATE OF CRISIS IN WISC NSIN Resolution No. St. Croix County, Wisconsin WHEREAS, the total number of farms in Wisconsin has declined from 93,000 to 78,000 and the number of dairy farms in Wisconsin has declined from 45,000 to 22,000 between 1980 and 1999; and WHEREAS, the acreage of farmland in Wisconsin has declined from 18.6 million acres in 1980 to 16.3 million acres in 1999, a 12.4% decline and 56,000 acres of farmland are lost in Wisconsin every year; and WHEREAS, prices received by Wisconsin's farmers for products such as corn and soybeans have declined or remained level for several years; and WHEREAS, prices received by Wisconsin's dairy farmers are lower than the national average and are kept artificially low by the Northeast Dairy Compact and the value of livestock and their products, poultry and their products, and dairy products sold in Wisconsin declined by 5% between 1991 and 1995, and WHEREAS, young people from rural areas are moving off farms in increasing numbers; and WHEREAS, the Federal and State governments have not taken proactive steps to resolve these problems. THEREFORE, be it resolved by the St. Croix County Board of Supervisors that a special committee of State and Federal representatives be formed to address why Wisconsin farmers receive an ever decreasing percentage of the consumer dollar; FURTHER, be it resolved that St. Croix County is declaring agriculture to be in a state of crisis in Wisconsin.
