St. Croix County, Wisconsin
WHEREAS, on April 1, 2000 the U.S. Bureau of the Census will conduct the decennial
census to determine the nation's population and how it is distributed; and
WHEREAS, the basic reason for the census is to apportion representation among the
states in the U.S. House of Representatives; and
WHEREAS, this census is important to Wisconsin because it will determine whether
Wisconsin retains its nine seats in the House of Representatives or loses one seat; and
WHEREAS, the census also affects representation in State and local government, funding
of community programs and services, and allocation of state shared revenue; and
WHEREAS, recognizing the significance of this census to Wisconsin, St. Croix County
desires to work with the U.S. Bureau of the Census in a public awareness campaign to inform the
residents of the County of the census and encourage participation in the census; and
WHEREAS, St. Croix County believes that a public awareness campaign should include:
cooperating with the cities, villages, and towns to coordinate this effort; encourage school
districts to educate students and parents about the census through its curriculum and newsletters;
encourage community organizations (churches, charitable groups, civic groups) to publicize the
census to its members; enlist businesses to promote census participation through advertisements,
promotional materials and displays, and other public awareness activities; and encourage residents
to apply for census jobs.
THEREFORE, be it resolved that the St. Croix County Board of Supervisors declares its
support of and participation in the 2000 census.
