The intent of this investigation is to confirm initial observations by the certified soil tester (CST) relating to the presence or absence of redoximorphic features in the A horizon and/or subsoil. In-situ soil texture, structure, and consistence factors were also reviewed as they relate to wastewater application rates. Other site conditions such as percent and direction of slope, landscape position, land surface contour length, and surface water hydrology may also be noted and their effects are factors considered in the recommendations and conclusions portion of this report. A typical soil profile could be described as follows: CST B-1 00-04" 10YR 313 sil, 1 m-csbk, mfr, aw. 04-07" 10YR 3/3 sil, 1m-csbk, mfr, aw, with flf 10YR 4/6 rmfs. 07-14" 10YR 4/3 sil, 1 msbk, mfr, cw, with f3f 7.5YR 5/2 and 4/4 rmfs. 14-20" 7.5YR 4/4 sl, 1 csbk mvfr, cw w/ f3f 5YR 4/6 and 4/3 rmfs. 20-25" 5YR 4/4 scl, 2msbk, mfr, with c3d 7.5YR 5/6 & 5/3 Fe rmfs, and f2d 7.5YR 2/1 Mn concentrations. CST B-3 • No redox concentrations were observed in the A horizon of B-3. • Redox concentrations and depletions in the silt loam subsoil appeared to be influenced most by the irregular boundary conditions between the silt loam and sandy loam (see fig. 1). Pockets of finer textured material (sil) is surrounded on three sides by coarser (sl) materials, and this discontinuity may account for a tension saturated condition that has greater reducing potential. Faint iron concentrations observed in the lower part of the A horizon need to be a topic of discussion. Considering the absence of significant redox concentrations and depletions in the subsoil and the landscape position, it doesn't follow that the A horizon would be saturated long enough to form Fe concentrations. If a mound system is designed to overcome limitations of a high level of seasonal soil saturation, the linear loading rate should not exceed 4.5 gpd/ft and the basal wastewater application rated should not exceed 0.3 gpd/ftz. The additional basal area will partially compensate for the moderate land slope and prevent wastewater leakage at the mound toe. At least 30 inches of sand lift is recommended when applying septic tank effluent to the distribution cell of the mound to ensure proper treatment.
