RESOLUTION REQUESTING CREATION OF SMOKEFREE COUNTY GOVERNMENT
BUILDINGS ANDAVEHICLES 3 `-f ('Q)

WHEREAS, St. Croix County is directed under Wisconsin law to
provide Public Health Services; and
WHEREAS the provision of these services is through the practices
of prevention, health promotion and protection and are for the
purpose of maintaining or improving the state of well -being of
the community as a whole; and
WHEREAS St. Croix County Human Services Public Health is
concerned with the fact that tobacco is the single most
preventable cause of death and disability and the leading single
cause of premature death in the U.S. today;.and
WHEREAS 30% of all cancer deaths and 87% of lung cancer deaths in
the U.S. are attributable to tobacco; and
WHEREAS the National Academy of Science, the Environmental
Protection Agency and the Surgeon General of the United States
have all declared environmental tobacco smoke to be a serious
public health hazard, completely apart from the harm that
smoking causes to the smoker; and
WHEREAS the Human Service Board and Public Health are committed
to the provision of clean air for clients and employees to
breathe, and a safe, healthy place to conduct business and /or
work; and
WHEREAS smokefree policies in public places not only protect the
health of children and adolescents but counteract the impression
that smoking is a normal, and therefore a safe, adult behavior;
and
WHEREAS a smokefree county government workplace represents good
health policy, good economic policy and good civic policy;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the St. Croix County Board
of Supervisors directs that all County governineit buildings and e , tti e
