Schmitt, P. Quinn Eden Prairie, MN 55347 This onsite investigation was requested by the certified soil tester (CST) and county inspector to better understand and interpret possible soil limitations to practical and successful onsite wastewater treatment and dispersal. Four soil pits were reviewed on lots where questionable Sol conditions were observed. All of the soil pits reviewed are likely classified as well-drained by the detailed soil survey. However, the subsoil conditions present leave much to be desired for long term, successful wastewater dispersal. Dense sandy material and generally sandy material with dense loamy sand and sandy loam bands are restrictive to downward water movement and can lead to hydraulic failure of below grade dispersal cells. Sometimes a conservative design with soil limitations in mind can overcome soil dispersal problems, but it is often best to use an above grade system that is well above limitations. O Lot A~ it was agreed that an above grade system like a mound or at-grade might be the best solution but a - --bel _ .ade system -mig.htwork--fine-too-if the soil application-rate used _was-less _than. _or..equal _to_0.4_gpd/ft2 with cells placed 6-10 feet apart. Sidewall absorption may be important in a below grade design so one recommendation beside a low soil application rate would be to use 12-18 inches of sidewall height above the cell inlet elevation. It was agreed that on 0.ot4 at a mound or at-grade system would operate best because fine textured solum and very dense substratu Conditions o Lot 34 re unique because of iron staining along old root channels. This feature many be the result of reduced iron upper horizons coming in contact with well aerated sand soil along a preferential flow path (root channel). The well aerated condition allowed the iron in solution to become oxidized into a stable feature in the flow path. In general, it is my opinion that the certified soil tester's concerns regarding the use of subsurface systems on these lots are well justified. In most cases, an above grade system should be used to ensure long term proper operation of dispersal areas.
