HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 1991 (18) RESOLUTION OPPOSING ANY CHANGE IN WI DOT REGULATIONS
REGARDING "DOUBLE BOTTOM" TRAILER TRUCKS
RESOLUTION 91 -
WHEREAS the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is considering on May
15, 1991 in a public hearing at Balsam Lake whether to allow "double- bottom"
semi trailer trucks to operate on Wisconsin Highway 35 between Hudson and
Siren; and
WHEREAS if approval is given, double- bottom semi trailer trucks of up to
60 feet long, excluding cabs, will then be allowed to operate on Highway 35,
including through the heavily travelled portions of Highway 35 in Saint Croix
County; and
WHEREAS Wisconsin Department of Transportation traffic counts conducted
three years ago demonstrate that an average of 4,600 cars /day travel Highway
35 between Hudson and Houlton and that an average of 8,400 cars /day travel
Highway 35 between Houlton and Somerset and this high traffic volume has led
to the state recently designating Highway 35 as a part of its CARE program, a
program dedicated to reducing high accident rates on heavily travelled
highways; and
WHEREAS allowing the use of "double- bottom" semi trailer trucks on Highway
35 will cause additional congestion on an already overburdened highway leading
to additional accidents and the need for greater public safety expenditures;
and
WHEREAS truckers have such readily available alternatives as Interstate
35E, U.S. Highway 61 and U.S. 53 for transporting commerce to and from
Northwestern Wisconsin;
THEN BE IT RESOLVED that the Saint Croix County Board of Supervisors go on
record as opposing any change in Wisconsin Department of Transportation
regulations which currently do not allow "double- bottom" semi trailer trucks
to operate on Highway 35 in Saint Croix County; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the Saint Croix County Clerk is directed to
transmit this resolution to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for
introduction into the May 15, 1991 Balsam Lake hearing record.
Submitted by the Public Protection Committee this 9th day of May, 1991.
