HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 1989 (01) RESOLUTION SUPPORTING INCREASED FEDERAL HIGHWAY AIDS FOR WISCONSIN. Resolution # / ( WHEREAS, Wisconsin's state and local highway and transit programs presently need increased revenues from major funding sources in order to properly maintain the State's highways and bridges; and WHEREAS, Wisconsin's 20.9 cents per gallon gas tax is now the highest in the nation; and WHEREAS, additional increases in the basic user fees, including the fuel taxes, vehicle registration fees, and other miscellaneous fees, would be unfair to approve, when the other major revenue source, federal highway aids, pays substantially less per capita to Wisconsin as compared with the other states in the nation; and WHEREAS, Wisconsin ranks 45th out of 50 states in federal highway aids received with $41 per capita compared with a national average of $66 per capita; and WHEREAS, presently Wisconsin collects about $300 million annually in Federal gas tax for the Federal Department of Transportation, but receives only about $200 million annually in Federal highway aids; and WHEREAS, both Governor Tommy Thompson and Wisconsin Transportation Secretary Fiedler support federal legislation increasing the amount of Federal Highway aids sent to Wisconsin to an amount equal to that collected in Wisconsin as Federal gas taxes and sent to Washington, thereby allowing Wisconsin to maintain and upgrade the transportation infrastructure in Wisconsin; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the St. Croix County Board of Supervisors, meeting in regular session, that the Board strongly urges United States Senators Kasten and Kohl, together with Congressman Steve Gunderson, to immediately draft federal legislation to correct the wide disparity that presently exists in Wisconsin between Federal gas taxes collected and sent to • Washington and Federal highway aids received by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, so that such sums collected and received are at least equal; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk is hereby directed to immediately send certified copies of this Resolution to Senator Kasten, Senator Kohl, and Congressman Steve Gunderson, the Wisconsin County Boards Association, and all County Clerks in the State of Wisconsin, Governor Thompson and Secretary Fiedler.
