The Jewett series consists of nearly level to slo in

well drained soils in till plains, ridges, and wide drain- T++
-wrt
ageways of ground moraines. These soils formed in silty
sediment and the underlying reddish sandy loam and b
loam till. Native vegetation was mainly native prairie y r.
grasses and oak savanna.
In the representative profile the surface layer is very
dark grayish brown silt loam about 9 inches thick (fig.y r
5). The subsurface layer is dark grayish brown silt
loam 2 inches thick. The subsoil is about 26 inches thick. fyM Y
In the upper part it is brown, friable silt loam; in the

middle part it is brown, friable heavy loam ; and in the "r r
lower part it is yellowish red, friable, sandy loam. The •a L `
substratum, to a depth of about 60 inches, is yellowish
red sandy loam.

moderate. Natural fertility and the permeability

Most areas of these soils are cultivated; they are
used to grow corn, oats, and alfalfa.
