Date of next meeting was set for May 2. Jensen moved that the agenda be adopted as presented. Burn seconded the motion. Motion carried. Burri moved that the previous meeting's minutes be approved. Berenschot seconded the motion. Motion carried. Berenschot moved that the vouchers be approved. Burri seconded the motion. Motion carried. Ag Agent's Report Milligan and Greg Andrews, Pierce County Ag Agent taught the Pesticide Applicator Training course to 74 people. Milligan taught at two heifer seminars in Barron and Chippewa Counties. Fifty-nine people participated in the seminars. Milligan taught"Cost of Raising Replacement Heifers,A Journey Into the Unknown". Milligan taught determining your cost of producing a hundredweight of milk at the Pierce-Pepin Holstein annual meeting. A pro.g,ram on strategic planning was coordinated by Milligan and Tim Jer enson Polk County_ Ag Agent. The Western Wisconsin Dairy Herd Health Seminar was held in Baldwin. The topics were Johne's Disease and milk quality. Forty-four people participated. Milligan assisted Tim Jergenson in starting a dairy producer network in Polk County. Thirty-four people participated in a Pastures for Horses seminar taught by Milligan. About 18—20 dairy farm producers will be participating in the dairy business analysis program. Farm visits have included farm business arrangements, dairy housing, ventilation,parlor design, rental rates, dairy nutrition, and crop production issues. 1 Family Living Agent's Report Mary introduced guest, Tiffany Laper, a teen mother who has made extensive use of the St. Croix Family Resource Center. Tiffany described the parenting help and personal support she has received from the center, and stated that'"ithout the center, she believed that her baby would have been taken away from her. Mary discussed the changes in her job the past 25 years showing how it has moved from a position which primarily supported the Extension Homemakers and 4-H programs to one that focuses more on building supports for youth and families within their communities. Mary now works with schools, hospitals, Family Resource Center, community groups, Head Start, and many other groups to create educational support systems for families. Mary also described many ongoing grants that she writes and administers to support programs for families. The Estate Planning series of three programs is being held using compressed video technology. The Family Resource Center program,Gardening: A Family Affair, will be held on April 8, noon to 3 pm at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Baldwin. The teen parents group for which Mary received an Extension grant has about 6 participants. One _ outcome is a babysitting cooperative which one of the mentors is helping to set up. HCE members are being taught about the possibilities of the internet and E-mail. Resource Agent Report Janke distributed copies of the "Economic Impact of Visitors to New Richmond"that he co-authored with Extension Specialist Steve Deller. The research estimated a$7.8 impact. Drinking water testing programs were held in Troy and Kinnickinnic. Over 240 people participated in the two programs. The results will be distributed during an educational meeting scheduled for April 27 at the American Legion hall in River Falls. A third program is scheduled in Star Prairie on April 7-8. Small business counseling was held on March 24 with five clients. The next counseling date is scheduled on April 24 in Hudson. Extension administration is creating three new land use education specialist positions, and has been negotiating with the UW-River Falls campus to house one of these positions in the Geography Department.
