PUBLIC PROTECTION COMMITTEE MEETING
November 9, 2000
MEMBERS PRESENT: Julie Speer, Chuck Mehls and Esther Wentz, Tom
Rose and Bob Gunderson. Meeting called to order by Chair Speer at
9 : 00 a.m. Mehls made the motion to adopt the agenda as presented
with a second by Rose. Carried.
STAFF PRESENT: Sheriff Dennis Hillstead, Administrative Assistant
Mary Martell, Patrol Captain Robert Klanderman and Renee Carufel .
Date of next meeting will be December 6th at 9 : 00 a.m.
Motion by Wentz/Gunderson to approve the minutes of October 6th.
Carried.
Hillstead reported receiving a new report from Rich Loney
regarding the Jail Assessment fund. Discussion was held regarding
the expenses that should come from the Jail Assessment fund and
the maintenance budget .
VISIONS: Hillstead reported we will not have the new version of
Visions until February which was supposed to be in place by
December. Rose asked Hillstead to advise the committee of any
updates of any computer programs that are needed. When it comes
to bonding and inmate monies, we are audited by the State and have
to go by their direction.
HUMANE SOCIETY: Judy Hillert and Theresa Jonas appeared before the
committee explaining Act 192 which finally became law 173 . They
have completed a course of examination on animal husbandry and
care issues, and applicable laws and investigative procedures.
One of the things that they want to help with is to handle animal
cases in the county without involving the Sheriff ' s department .
The State created a new position of humane officer by passing law
173 . The County would have to pass an ordinance to create this
position. Discussion was held. Hillert and Jonas explained how
they would handle animal situations which would save a lot of time
in the Sheriff ' s department . No decision was made at this time.
This will be put on the agenda next month.
Rose suggested Hillstead inform the committee when his department
is getting close to using up the budget on each line item.
MEDICAL EXAMINER' S REPORT: Committee went over the bills from the
Medical Examiner. Motion by Mehls/Wentz to approve $5151 . 02 .
