PUBLIC PROTECTION COMMITTEE MEETING
July 19, 2000
MEMBERS PRESENT: Julie Speer, Chuck Mehls, Esther Wentz and Tom
Rose . Gunderson was excused. Meeting called to order by Chair
Speer at 9 :30 a.m. Wentz made the motion to adopt the agenda as
presented with a second by Mehls . Carried.
STAFF PRESENT: Sheriff Dennis Hillstead, Jail Captain Karen
Humphrey and Renee Carufel .
UPGRADED POSITION REQUEST: Sheriff Hillstead apoligized for
bringing this to the committee at this late date. He explained
the new position request for a Jail volunteer and Programs
Coordinator. The present part time position costs $26, 825 . He
would like to have this go to full time. The cost of the full
time position would be $53 , 650 .
Humphrey is looking for a grant that would pay for this position.
This position is needed to facilitate programs such as : GED, AOAD,
AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) , NA (Narcotics Anonymous) , Anger
Management, Family & Parenting Skills, and Job & Life Skills . It
is also to assist with the. jail classification system. The
classification system provides that all inmates must be classified
and receives an assessment as to types of educational and
behavioral problems they have, and that should be met .
This is making something positive out of a negative and will help
break the cycle of the revolving door with many of these inmates.
Motion by Rose/Wentz to approve this request for the new full time
position of Jail Volunteer & Programs Coordinator for a cost of
$53, 650 which includes benefits . Carried.
Motion to adjourn at 10 : 15 a.m. by Rose/Wentz . Carried.
