ABSORBENTS FROM LANDFILL

St Croix County, Wisconsin
WHEREAS, disposing of oil filters and oil absorbent waste in landfills causes millions of
gallons of oil to be released each year and countless tons of recyclable steel to be landfilled, increasing
environmental risks and destroying recyclable material; and
WHEREAS, the St. Croix County Board of Supervisors has determined that the proper
collection and recycling of oil filters and oil absorbent waste is a priority as exemplified by the
offering of collection of these items through the annual Clean Sweep hazardous waste program; and
WHEREAS, the Wisconsin Department of Commerce Report on the Disposal of Oil Filters
and Other Oil- Absorbent Materials in Wisconsin recommended in June 2005 that state policy be
developed to create landfill bans on oil filters and oil absorbents; and
WHEREAS, Senate Bill 186 has been introduced in the Wisconsin legislature as an act that
prohibits the disposal in landfills of used automotive engine oil filters and oil absorbent waste and
provides penalties; and
WHEREAS, Senate Bill 186 is consistent with the recommendations on oil filters and oil
absorbent waste made by the Governor's Task Force on Waste Materials Recovery and Recycling.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the St Croix County Board of Supervisors
supports the passage of Senate Bill 186 and its enactment into law in Wisconsin.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be forwarded by the County
Clerk to St Croix County's representatives in the Wisconsin State Senate and Assembly, Governor Jim
Doyle, the Wisconsin Counties' Association and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
