Administrative Report State /County Budget Kling updated the committee regarding the proposed 16 -day furlough for state employees and the effect on UWEX employees. Early indications are that the 133 contract the state has with the county will be adjusted to reflect the furloughs resulting in a savings to the county over the next biennium. More details will be made available as the state budget process moves forward. WACEC Marzolf moved that Sprain purchase an auction item for the WACEC state meeting and reimbursed by members. Peavey seconded the motion. Motion carried. 4 -H Youth Development Agent's Report Witzel introduced Sarah Joseph, the summer 4 -H assistant. She gave a brief background about herself and her education. Witzel also shared upcoming events including camp which is June 22- 24 for 3 -5 graders. We have about 75 youth registered. Older camp is June 24 -26 and we have 43 youth registered. This year we had a maximum amount of campers for the number of counselors we have. We are hoping to increase counselor numbers for next year. The older camp allows youth to stretch their abilities by having archery, rock climbing and a six -hour canoe adventure for the 7 th grade. We also have two other learning experiences coming up including WI 4 -H and Youth Conference in Madison. Approximately 700 youth grades 8 -10 experience dorm life on campus while attending workshops during the day. In July, three youth from St. Croix along with three from Dunn County and five from Eau Claire County will be traveling to York, PA. They are participating in the interstate exchange. The youth spend a week living with a family to experience life in another part of the US along with learning about how people live there and what 4 -H is like. June will also be spent getting entries ready for state fair. We have 1 approximately 40 youth who plan to exhibit at state fair along with youth participating in music and clothing revue. Nutrition Educator's Report Lestrud reported on the new grant contract for the WNEP program. Most of the funding is federal, but the county contributes indirect costs (which are matched with federal dollars) by providing physical space, office supplies, information systems and county administrative costs. Lestrud is currently working with a state committee to develop educational curriculum related to fruits and vegetables. Family Living Agent's Report Sprain shared that tomorrow there will be another Drug Court graduation. UWEX continues one - on-one financial management help. There has been much interest in food preservation already this season. Sprain will be promoting the use of DVD's on food preservation that the public can check out from our office. On the committees' suggestion, she will also contact public access channels. Resource Development Agent's Report Paul and Sherrill Schottler will be recognized for donating a conservation easement on the 162 acres they own in Somerset Township. An evening of celebration, education and leadership will take place at their tree farm beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 23. Their farm is located at 458 Rice Lake Road Somerset, WI. The event is free and those interested in attending should register by contacting Polly Henke or Pete Kling at the UW- Extension office.
