Birth to Three /Family Support Advisory Committee Meeting
Wednesday April 8, 2009
Members Present: Mary Johnson, Susan Bjerstedt, Cassie Welch, Wendy Kramer.
Staff present: Mary Hofland and Norma Vrieze
Guest: County Board Chair Roger Rebholz
Meeting called to order at 4:35 by Susan Bjerstedt in the absence of a chair.
Mary reported that the Family Support Annual Plan was submitted as prepared and reviewed by
some committee members. The Family Support Program brochures were reviewed and
recommendations were made for changes.
Discussion took place regarding the role of this committee. Norma indicated that it was not a
statutory requirement for the Birth to 3 Program to have an advisory committee, but there does
need a way for parents to provide input. This can be done in a variety of ways, including surveys
(which they already do), special events /meetings, etc. Committee members discussed the
difficulty getting parents of B -3 participants to meetings at this time of day and in addition to all
the other things they are dealing with. It was agreed that the B -3 staff will discuss the issue at
their upcoming Self- Assessment with the technical resource contact from the State.
Mary talked about the campership funding for this year. There was discussion about the intention
of the Knights of Columbus in giving their donation. It was the consensus of the group that the
KCs in the past have specified their funds be used for children with developmental and physical
disabilities. If changes are desired, it should be discussed with them. A United Way grant also
provides funding for camperships. The grant for United Way does include recipients children with
severed emotional disorders as well as DD and PD the grant should be written to state that.
Norma reported that B -3 may get some funding through American Reinvestment and Recovery
Act. If so, there will be very specific criteria for how it can be used. One of the possibilities is to
contract for special services to provide consultation to staff for low incidence populations. More
information will be coming in the next month.
